550 PTO question

I have a 1969 Oliver 550 with a PTO problem, I have split the tractor at this point and have the clutch fiber, steels and spider out of the tractor. My question is what is the minimum that the clutch pack should be?? Also what else should I check or do while the tractor is split?? Should I replace the throw out bearing?? I have no idea when the last time it was split and what has or has not been done to it. I have owned it for the past 7 years.
Thanks Joe

OK I went out and measure them all, fibers were .154, .156, [email protected] and [email protected]. The steels were .060, 3@ .061 and .062. I am wondering what new fibers and steels thickness are??

When you say pilot bearing, is that the one inside the transmission clutch flywheel?? What about the throw out bearings for the PTO and trans?? To me they seem to have allot of play in them, but I have no idea what a new one feels like??
Thanks for the help, Joe

I replaced mine last fall. Its cheap money to do it now. I think that the pilot bearing is around $10 and is really easy to remove and install. Throwout bearing is not too bad either.
I had to replace mine because the grease tubes were broke and slicked up the fiber plates as well as robbed the throwout bearing of grease. So I'd check that as well. How is your clutch? Might be worth making sure that is good before you put it back together.

The clutch feels good, but since I have it apart I might as well look at the drive clutch and see if it needs replaced as well. I am hoping that the Pressure plate is OK as the cost of that thing is WOW. Where is the pilot bearing that you replaced??
Thanks for the help, Joe

Joe,

do you have a manual? If not look at AgParts website and find the blowup. http://www.agpartsfirst.com/clutch_apf.pdf I think that's the right page.

If you look in the center of the pressure plate with the tractor split, you can see where the shaft goes. The pilot bearing is in the center of the flywheel behind the clutch. Pretty easy to replace. A little slide hammer puller and it should come right out.

OK that is what I thought that you were talking about for the pilot bearing. Where is the best place to get parts for good price??

Once again, Thanks Guys for all your help and time for my project.

Joe
