550 RE-BUILD

I bought a broken down 550 in the field about two years ago for parts. After freeing the transmission I found it ran but smoked accessively but felt it deserved to be resurrected. I have found a car mechanic to do the work but I need to know which rebuild kit to buy. The Tisco seems the best as I would expect to need bearings but your inputs would help. Also he ask if the sleeves are pressed in, Thanks for your replies! Allen L

Hi, I would also recommend Korves Oliver, Do a google search. They are very good people to deal with and will help you out in many ways, they are very knowledgeble. Also they are priced well. As for the sleeves...they are pressed in by hand or gently persuaded with a rubber mallet, no need for a press. Chris

if you order fron korves they will have the M&W pistons and sleeves (more power) also you might try ag parts first, or A&I,they all sell good kits

First of all I would not order a kit untill I had the engine tore down and all measured up. I would not use the M & W kit. Also is your tractor an early 3-1/2 inch bore engine or the late 3-5/8 bore engine from the factory? FYI Tisco and most of these other compaines do not make the kits they sell. More questions. Myself I would use a Clevite sleeve kit.

Out of curiosity, what's wrong with the M&W kit? Cheaper quality, too thin of sleeves? Kind of curious cuz when I get ready to rebuild my 55 I was going to go with one of Korves' kits.
Thanks Ross

Thank you all for the insights. I will use your wisdom more once we tear the engine down. I am not sure if mine is the older 3 1/2 bore. In the next month or two I may come back for some more advice. It sure is nice to have people like yourselves to assist. Have a Great Day! Allen L.
