5610 fuel feed problems

1991-5610 ford tractor does not get enough fuel to run well. Bad fuel, cleaned everything including the tank, bled injectors, cleaned fuel lines, changed filters. Tractor runs like new for about 10 min. then starts slowing down ( it will not die), then I press the primer pump and it picks up for about 10 min, then it slows again. While it is slowed down giving it more throttle does not make any difference. Any ideas will be appreciated, please!!!

Did you clean the strainer in the tank valve? Did you bleed the filter(s) before you bled the injectors? Do you have planty of fuel at the inlet line to the pump? If you do than maybe the pump has a problem.

we had trouble that sounds like that once after changing fuel filter had a leak in the filter gasket. Took me some time to find that one. New filter fixed it.

How about the screen in transfer pump? Under round cover on transfer pump theres a screen.

How did you find out it was leaking? Was it leaking on the inside or outside?

just worked on my uncles with the same issue, put fuel pressure gauge at the pump and there was next to no pressure-put new lift pump on and also make sure tank is venting properly, wasps can be quite industrious!

This filter was in a glass case and I just happened to see some air bubbles go up the inside. We would be working in the field and it would start to slow down just wait a couple of minutes and we could go again. This was on a 1505 massey 4 wheel drive with a 3208 cat engine.

It would help to know some basic info on the tractor first...

Is it a cab model or open station... because most cab models had the poly tank under the cab and open station models had the steel tank under the hood.

Second question... does it have a Minimec inline pump with the fuel lines exiting the top of the pump or is it a CAV rotary (DPS) that has the fuel lines exiting the rear of the pump facing the starter? There is also an off chance that it might have a CAV rotary (DPA) that looks similar to the DPS EXCEPT that the lines exit around the circumference of the pump head with banjo fittings and bent lines. It shouldn't have that pump tho...


If it has the poly tank under the cab with either type of CAV pump it will need an electric lift pump. If it has the Minimec pump then the transfer pump is the round part on the side of the pump...

The basics are: check for flow coming to the filter, through the filter and into the pump. If still in doubt you can remove the side plates on the CAV pumps where the return line enters... this will allow you to see inside and see if there's fuel coming in...

Going by your description it seems as though there is a supply problem of some type.

It does not have a cab, it has a metal tank and the fuel is gravity fed. It is gravity fed through the glass bowl or water seperator through the filter, that has a primer hand pump on the filter. The fuel goes on straight to the injector pump. I did find the screen in the tank cutoff valve was nearly stoped up, cleaned and it helped a great deal. I believe it does have a cav rotary (DPS) pump. the lines do exit out of the end of the pump facing the starter. Can I take the end of the pump off and check for blockage. Do you have any other suggestions? Every cleaning makes a big difference, I thought I had it fixed. But there is still something there.
