5610 II starter.

Been having trouble with the starter on my 5610 II. Nothing when I turned the key. Took starter and solenoid to starter/alternator shop for a check. Owner said it was working fine. Told him what that tractor was doing and he said check the neutral safety switch. Bypassed the NSW and the tractor started right up. Thought that was the problem. Four days later tractor started fine but when I shut the engine down there was an unusual noise from the starter just as the engine shut off. Now when I try to start it the starter sounds like it is full of gravel. That is the best I can describe the sound. Pulled starter off checked it with jumper cables. Sounds fine. Measured the pinion movement on the rear of the starter only has 1/4" of travel. Is this normal? Seems like there should be more movement in it. I guess the thing needs rebuilding after all. What do ya'll think?
