580C shuttle rebuild

I've received my shuttle kit and have had some time to work on it this afternoon, I'm up to the part where I need to compress the clutch packs from behind to measure the clearance, is there any thing special I need to do here? mEL, you talked about leaving a bearing out in the reassembly, why? I also see the manual says there is a special tool to center the torque converter on the flex plate, can this be done by another means, or do I need to get a tool for this? We're having a snow storm and this is a good project, interesting too.
