Anyone know why the 585 diesel is such a poor starter?
Mine starts to smoke like a train after 110 HP and I can't get it over 137. I use it on a disc bine and I must say it gets kind of black in the sky when the going gets tough. I've heard a turbo helps the old guy breath a bit better, I've not seen one but would like info if someone has.
Thanks
Bruce

My 585 doesnt start well either but I have it set up for pulling so the fueling has alot to do with that. I was thinking they should have 142 stock. In my opinion the 585 breathes pretty well being naturally aspirated. Have you had your pump or injectors checked out lately? As for putting a turbo on one I can probably answer any questions you have and I have pictures of how I did mine. If you want you can email me at [email protected].

Dads 585's started better than the 504's usually did and didnt really smoke a lot. I know we had an injection pump go bad years ago and it would smoke like a freight train and not a lot of power, we swicthed the pump and pulled fine and clean after that. We have also tested and switched injectors, they seem to weaken with time. Also, like mentioned if pump timing is off, it will smoke and lose power also. Never dynoed any of the A4ts because they dont have ptos, but they would pull as much as the 4-150 white with 3208 cat. Our biggest problem over the 20 years we farmed with them was spinning a rod bearing. This happended three times over the years, never seen one in person with a turbo, they seem to pull fine without them in my opinion, let us know what you find out.

Its all about the rings and the compression from what I have learned about working with these engines. Any of the moline engines 451ci 504ci or the 585ci engines are low compression to start with and dont like to start. Most people use starting fluid on them to get them started and break the rings and they dont start.

I have a G-955 right now with a 451ci engine that sat for a long time without running and the rings are now stuck and it has half the compression it should have and it does not start and smokes buckets when pulling and is down in power.

I would suggest a compression check, a fuel timing check and then put it on a dyno and see what it is doing. I am betting you have an engine problem somewhere, and I am guessing it is a compression problem.

The turbo helps, I have a charger on my G-1355 and it is pushing 180HP with not a breath of smoke, but I rebuilt the engine with total seal rings and new pistons when we did the charger. It is a very powerful tractor now, but I would not have wanted to put the charger on it until it got rebuilt.

Just my 2 cents, enjoy.

This is not even a answer to this question but I appreciate the pictures you kind folks put on here from time to time.

I would assume that you have checked your ENTIRE intake system for obstruction, if you did more than likely you have some timing or injection pump issue. yes a Turbo will enhance these engines if done properly and within reason as Shep has....however we have one here that very comfortably produces 160+ hp with very little smoke and it starts without spray.
