6 volt jump

I have an old 6 volt tractor that I would like to jump with my 12 volt pick-up.

Do i attach negative to negative and p to p; or someelse when using a 6 volt tractor battery and a 12 volt car battery.

And what would happened if I did it in reverse in case I screw up.

Always positive to positive and negative to negative. When ground polarity is different, only attach cable from terminal to terminal. If you do it wrong there are a whole lot of bad things that can happen including an exploding battery. A battery is full of sulfuric acid, so an explosion is much more dangerous than just flying plastic and lead.

Be sure you only do P to P and N to N, leave one clamp unconnected until the starter is running on the 6 volt battery, then touch the last clamp to a good frame location away from the battery (to avoid sparks near the battery), just long enough to start the engine. If the 6 volt is positive ground be sure to connect N to N and P to P even if the frame is P, and do not have the frames on the two systems touching.

Don't do it. You can blow up BOTH batteries and fry the truck alternator in one pop. The 6 volt battery will look like a short on the 12 volt system, but the 12 volt system will intantly overcharge the 6 volt battery.

NEVER EVER hook a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt battery unless you don't want to see any more. You can blow up the 6 volt battery in your face and battery acid will take your eyes out. Now if you do want to jump start it hook you cables up + to + and - to Neg but say if its + ground hook your + cable to the frame and then hook your - to the start terminal so you and not hooking it right to the battery. It will spark a good bit and spin the engine over the moment you hook it up so be sure its out of gear and the switch is on

Seems to me it would be much safer to connect the 6 volt battery to a 6 volt charger with a starting circuit. Could be a lot cheaper too if something goes wrong. Always p to p and n to n. You can avoid risking damage to the alternator if one is involved by disconnecting it. Take care...........RW

Old's right. Jump directly to the starter,not the battery. I wouldn't HOOK it to the post on the starter either. Just touch it on there so you can take it right back off. Don't push the starter button when you do it.
