6 volt or 12 volt

1952 A put a volt meter on the genny while it was running and it read 5 volts. shut it off and put the volt meter on the battery and it showed 12 volts. just got the tractor yesterday. there are some pics on a previous post. how do i determine if it is 6 or 12 volt.and how do you check the oil level. cant find the dipstick, or am i the dipstick?????

Welllllll if the battery reads 12 its probably a 12 and NOT a 6 volt. A 12 volt battery normally has 6 fill cap cell holes, its made up of 6 cells each of 2.1 volts.

If theres only 5 volts out the genny it sounds bad regardless if its a 6 or 12 volt genny.

Heres my Troubleshooting Procedure for non charging, it can help tell if its a genny versus a Voltage Regulator problem, but its probably the genny thats bad

Danny....Oil Level is checked by a oil level petcock behind the flywheel. Just a 3/4 end-wrench. Loosen the pet-cock. If oil runs out you are good to go. If it don't then add some through the crank case breather located in front of the shifter..I would check oil level. Warm the engine up then change all oils. The drain plug is located on the bottom of the block. The trans/differential plug is located ahead of drawbar. Re-fill with 15-40 or 30 weight. Just my thaughts tho. The engine takes 11 quarts and the trans/diff takes 7 gallons of 80-90

Husker you realy need to be sure you know what you are talker about and not pass out incorect info. 1952 Model A oil check petcock is below clutch pully on the right hand side also oil fill cap just above the clutch. your info works for early 1947 A s and back. if you give the wrong info a guy may do more harm then good.
also oil check is only on flywheel side on hand start models

also- the oil drain plug is NOT on the bottom of the block! The oil drain is on the bottom of the MAIN CASE. this is a separate casting. Some have plugs on bottom of the block for coolant, but usually that is in the bottom of the HEAD.
