i am trying to figure out how the starter drive works so i can attempt to fix it. the starter will spin but it is not completing the cycle. thanks for the help.

There is a clutch mechanism in the starter drive assembly that transmits the starter motor torque to the drive gear. It"s not repairable when it wears out. You just replace the starter drive.

You can check it by removing the starter, rotating the starter drive by hand to the fully externded positionaand then wedging it in the extended position with a piece of wod. Using jumpers connected to the battery, attach the ground to the starter attach flange and JUST TOUCH the other battery connection to the lug on the starter housing. If the clutch is good, the motor will jerk and make a humming sound. If the clutch is worn out, the starter motor will spin making a whirring noise.

You push on the starter button.
Starter spins and the drive extends.
Engine starts and the flywheel spins the starter drive back to the starter.
You release the starter button and the starter drive stays retracted.
Ready to start engine next time.

You can also put 12V on a 6V starter.
Just make sure your engine is properly tuned and don"t go nuts cranking 12V on a 6V starter. It will last many, many years.
77 hours and counting on her Fergy.

ya" knows "em when ya" hears "em!
The worn clutch makes a whirring noise. The locked motor makeds a humming sound.

The starter has to really "kick" as it starts to turn or it will not throw out the pinion into mesh with the Flywheel. The pinion could be sticking, try washing the Bendix it slides on with some gas, but don't use any oil or it will collect the dust from the clutch. These starters do break the terminal inside the housing, where the battery lead connection attaches to the coils, it may need re-soldering into position again. The Commutator that the brushes run against should be bright copper coloured and not black or burnt. make sure the brushes are not sticking in their holders and that they are not worn too much or they will not touch. Check the bushes in either end of the commutator that they are not worn or it will twist when it comes under load and this will act as a brake and stop it spinning so fast....John
