6-volt to 12-volt

what does it take to change a 6-volt to a 12 volt. i have a 66 that is 6 volt and seems to take a lot to crank it over. would changing to 12v help with this?? also have 77 with 6v and it is pos. grnd. any help or suggestions would be great.

The pure and simple is a 12 volt battery, an alternator like the Delco 10si, switching the wires around on the coil and a ballast resister and then knowing how to wire it up correctly. All in all about $100 worth of parts and knowing how to wire them up. Oh forget one part a diode or lite bulb to stop the alternator from back feeding the ignition

I don't have a diagram but I can talk you through it. Not all that hard since theres only 3 wires on the alternator

'Seems' is one of those peculiar subjective words. You may find you are not feeding enough to turn it over fast enough; you may have a starter motor in need of attention; battery may have seen better days or is too small. Is the other tractor the same? If that one turns OK, then so should this one - unless someone has replaced the liners/pistons with larger ones and upped the compression ratio. Comparison can depend on engine condition also.
May only need connections cleaning up or fitting larger size of battery lead or well-overdue maintenance to the starter.
Yes, 12 volts will increase starting speed. If lighting is fitted you will need to change all bulbs or run them in series or add resistors.
It will, of course, no longer be original if that is a consideration.
One thing I would not consider is any suggestions of fitting an 8 volt battery as a band aid solution.

I hate to see this happen,but if you think you have to do it (like I did on my 77) use a 12 volt generator instead of an alternator. Looks original that way at least. I bought a new rebuilt for a 1600. Bolted right on,new regulator too. Wiring is the same. Left mine positive ground,just have to polorize the new one. One from a Super 55 diesel or a 550 should fit too.

Got 77 running fine (with Carb. off another 77)and seems to crank over ok on 6-volt. would like to keep 66 on 6 volt also. put new battery in 66 still cranks hard i might check stater to see how it helps. also have a bad alt. on 66 take off batt. and it dies thought it should run off alt. once it's started. thanks again

Good quality heavy battery cables can make a big difference. I used to work for a dealer that used 1/0 welding cable to make battery cables.
