60 rollamatic spindle/nut stripped

dad"s 60 1955, rollamatic split pedestal spindle thread, wheelbearing nut 1"fine is stripped and will not stay tight, have replaced the nut twice and it works loose with use. have seen a nut with a slot cut thur one side bolt and nut cast into the side of the nut which tightens the thread of the nut a bit on the 1952 60. anyone have a source for this type of adjustable castle nut? or have some they will part with? a suggestion of how too repair this spindle?....replace the spindle? will the 3020 rollamatic fit a 60? thanks for your thoughts pj

You need the abc 255 for the 60

Others have given great advice. Have you tried peaning the nut with a drift and mallet ? I thought they had a lock washer (bend the tab over deal). hth

BTW, it's just a 'nut', Fastenal or others should have one. Yah, it is probly 'thin'. Hard to modify. NOT !

If the spindle thread is bad, a new nut won't help much.

I had one of these and "fixed" it this way - Replaced the cotter pin with a spring pin; seated the castle nut against the pin; measured the gap between the nut and washer (which faces the bearing); added enough machine bushings between the nut and the washer to fill the space. Thus the bearing is kept tight by the castle nut pressing against the spring pin.

Not good enuf for an Indy500 wheel, but OK for my old tractor.

The older A's used the split nut with a bolt to squeeze it tighter. Those are cast iron and can break if squeezed too much.

A far better fix which I have done several times and an old time Deere guy from way back told me about is to go to the local FORD tractor dealer. He called them swager (sp) lock nuts. Ford uses these several places. They are steel and have several slits and have an external nut that tightens over the outside of it thus it acts like a collet squeezing down into whats left of the threads. These will hold on some VERY worn out spindles.
