I have had this problem before but can't remember what I did to fix it. The thing started running bad under a load by itself. It only hits on the #1 cylinder once in a while. I pulled the plug wire off and if you make the spark jump from the wire to the plug it runs fine. the minute you put it back on it misses again. I have new points, plugs, wires, and cond. to put on tonight. Thinking it's in the wire but what do you guys think?

Its a fouled plug. By pulling the wire off a bit, it causes a hotter spark. If the plug is just a bit dirty, it will fire. If the plug is real bad, it wont. Put in a new plug and your other tune up parts. I would highly recommend putting on solid core wires instead of carbon core.

Cold fouled plug. Try a plug one heat range hotter.

I agree with Jake, sounds like a plug thats fouling. Keeping the engine temp up to 180 and over will help reduce fouling plus a good tune up and wire core wires, maybe try non resistor plugs like Autolite 3116 as well.

Make sure you don't pull any plug wires off a running two cylinder with Petronix Electronic Ignition, it will cook the brain. The units work well on ours......only after an expensive learning curve about the device ungrounded.....they work well with the plug wires on. Paul

When I was a kid, most farmers were poor in their minds anyway. Probably one out of every ten had a wire jumping a fouled plug.

I have three AC's that foul plugs, and one does it about a couple hrs after a new set of plugs. I put some different brand name plugs in it five or six years ago, and so far so good. The plugs were $6.00 each if I remember correctly.

If you are intrested, I could find the plug number, and brand. I had tried Champion, and Autolites, but never found one that would take care of my issues.

I have a 60 that the coolant temp wont move off the far left mark,and my 60 runs great on #2 cylinder but #1 cylinder by itself runs up and down like it misses.I have had carb rebuilt,new points,condensor and plugs.I don't know what else to do.

It turned out to be the plug. Couldn't tell it by looking at it. Had a carbon wire running that one. Changed wires to copper core and new plugs, points, ect. Still runs a little rough on that one. It runs up and down and can't make it much better with the carb. I just rebuilt it too. Just had to find a happy spot and let it go. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Coolant temp shows cold but the gauge doesn't work. It's warming up though.

Mine does exactly the same thing. I'm going to play with the plug gap tonight and see if that helps. In theory you should be able to make the gap wider and get a hotter spark right? I'll let you know if it helps.

It will never run right until the coolant is at a minimum of 180F. 195F never hurt them a bit.
