I was looking in my electrical systems book (sm29) to rewire my tractor and was wandering what the purpose of the black wire from the starter which then tee's into the ignition resistor with the green hot coil wire. thanks, bunghammer.

Its purpose it to induct a full 12 volts on your 6V coil only during starting (when the starter pedal is depressed). It does make a difference in cold weather and it is an absolute must on LP tractors.

One problem with those SM2029 Wiring Diagrams is they lumped several tractros together i.e. 60 and 620 and others etc together and therefore arent always perfectly accurate as not all those tractors used the ballast resistor and start by pass I dont think. However if your tractor has that feature its for the purposes the gents below described and should be used especially for cold weather starting. When I was a used tractor dealer I found so many had that wire missing or the switch was replaced by one without that extra terminal.

Wow.. I see someone on here has no knowledge of electrical terminology or practical theory.

Inductors 'induct' or oppose -change- in current.

resistors resist... thus reducing current.

they are not interchangeable.. do not mean the same thing.. though you can have a wire would resistor that has inductive properties.. these usually affect it's impeadance. ( kinda like resistance.. but then you have to learn about AC circuits and not just DC circuts as well ).

The concept of ignition bypas just means you have a solenoid or other means of bypassing the regular ignition resistor that is inline with the coil so that you have more power available during starting.. then after starting.. ignition resistor is back inline with the coil.

come on guys.. this is 9th grade electronics here!

Ah.. attack the messenger because you don't like the message.

I'm stuck using a chicklet keyboard on a laptop.. not the easiest thing to type on while doing 90wpm.

That's exactly what we need.. a grammer and spelling moderator in an antique tractor forum.. vs real data and facts...

figures it's in the green sub.... makes perfect sense... form over function...

just rewired a 1953 60, its hooked up to charge in the cold weather to. starts nice now , put it back to poistive ground to, took about $15 to rewire it with 12ga wire back to color code, and $30 for new point's conden's and coil after my father left the switch on for a half hour, melted the oil out of the old coil . burnt my hand cuting wires to stop a fire

You sure you wired it right? I’ve accidentally left my switch on several times and sometimes for several days with no ill effects, or maybe I was just lucky? Also mine does not have the extra terminal on the starter or the wire for it. Mine is a 1956 all fuel.

was not shure why it burnt the points out put the coil smoking, dash was out at the time, points was at ground, had most the new wires on it then, brand new switch was just instaled
