6000 engine rebuild

hi all, rebuilding my 6000 diesel. got the motor together and under a pile of stuff was this big round washer looking thing. i think it's an oil slinger. my crank was shot so got a reground one and the crank gear was on in, but looks like the slinnger goes behind it. lots to take back off, and i know if it's in there it's there for a reason, but, do i really need it?
thanks
Gary

the slinger is used to lubricate your timing gears, if it was mine I would bite the bullet and tear front cover back off and install it.

bummer, sounds like i best do it. to be safe, does it go behind the front gear closest to the crank, or infront of the front gear closest to the front seal?

i looked at the parts diagram and thought the same, but also agree it could be in front. so, suggestions? would it work in front of the gear just as well? seems to me that makes the most sense.
