601 distributor problem

Bought a Ford 601 today. $800.00. Cranked after I got it home. Heard what sounded like a pop in the engine. Shut off. Won't fire. Rotor will not move when engine turned over. Suggestions?

Could be a stripped timing gear(s), stripped distributor drive gear(s), or simply a sheared pin in the distributor drive gear.

Since the hydraulic pump is driven off of the back of the camshaft, something locking up the hydraulic pump can take out the camshaft or the camshaft drive gears.

The engine oil pump is driven from the end of the distributor shaft, so if the lube pump jams, it can shear the distributor gear pin.

Look for broken Dist Drive gear or sheared roll pin through the gear

If the rotor ain"t movin" the distributor gear may have sheared it"s retention pin, the distributor shaft may have broken or the cam distriutor drive gear or cam is damaged. If it has a timing chain that could be broken or the gear that drives the cam could be loose or damaged. That"s all I can think of at the moment.

Thanks. Pulled pan today. Gear at head of camshaft broke off. From Bob's reply, I guess the hyd pump is locked up. I was in the process of raising the lift when the pop happened and it shut down.
