601 ford pto problem

I have a 601d series with live pto that the pto keeps coming out of gear under a hard load. I have split the tractor between the hydro res and rear end. the pto shift fork and detent ball were all renewed, the pto shaft has no play in any direction. my question is... is there something in the clutch area that could cause my problem? thanks

My guess is the pto shaft itself has enough wear on the splines to allow it to pop out. I have the same issue with my 860, when I get a bit of down time I am changing the shaft.

I checked the pto shaft close and there was no wear to speak of, unless the transmission side of the pto shaft is the problem?

I don't think so. If the counter shaft bearings are so worn it is causing the PTO to pop out, you would have broken a LOT of teeth in the trans by now.

Is the coupler "clean"? No burs or gunk that can keep it from fully seating? How did you check that the PTO shaft bearings were tight? The usual wear is an "in-out" slop and that is pretty obvious.

IF that is all good, then you may want to double check the stuff you already did. See if you missed something. It happens.

I have the same problem with my 601. I have had the same answers that you have received. I keep a bungee strap in that area and tie it around the lever. It works every time.
