'62 MF205 Industrial

Hi folks! I recently purchased a 62 205 Industrial with a 3 cylinder diesel engine and I'm looking for information on it. Mainly, is there a service manual available for it?

The tractor starts right up and everything seems pretty good (except the brakes, those don't work). The paint is terrible.

Anywhere you folks can point me for information would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Well for starters, you've got yourself one tough old tractor! I have a 202 which is the gas engine without instant reverse and it does a lot of work for me.
I see you have wheel weights, those are a necessity when you have a front end loader. Hopefully the power steering works too.
In the top left hand side of the screen there is a link to tractor manuals, I would start there. There are other tractors which are similar and the manuals would work for some things but there are some things you will want the specific manual for.
The loader is a 102 Davis loader from the looks of it, I have the same one on my 202. Orig. parts are hard if not impossible to get for things like the control valves. I ended up replacing my valves with something more modern.
All in all they are a great tractor and having the diesel engine makes it that much more desirable.

Oh, the brakes may be as simple as leaking axle seals. Brake parts are available and pretty straight forward to replace. Look at the tractor parts link right under the manuals link.

Good rundown, Inno. Concur on the opinion the rear seals are
probably leaking and have soaked the brake shoe linings,
making them slip. Replace the seals, have the shoes re-lined.

Thanks folks! I ordered a service manual last night, so I should have that in a week or two.

Regarding the brakes, it looks like the brakes are enclosed in the rear axle housing. The adjustments look maxed out, so I'm thinking they're just worn out and need replacing. Hopefully I'm wrong.

How many oil filters does this thing have?? It looks like there are three cartridge type filters on this engine. (Perkins 3 cylinder diesel.)

Also, what rear end/trans fluid do you folks recommend for this. Shuttle shift 4 speed (1-2, hi-lo. Whatever the instant reverse drive is.. I assume they are a common fluid, but again I could be wrong.

It does have a leak at the steering column. It looks like it should be fairly straightforward to replace that seal.

I used to work on newer Kubota and New Holland tractors a bit. I love this older stuff! I've since switched industries and I actually enjoy turning wrenches again!!

Unfortunately most of what you asked about is different on my 202 so I can't help much.
The brakes are basic drum brakes, once you get the rear wheels off there are screws (large flat head)) which hold the drums in place. Once the drum is off it's pretty much standard brakes. When you are in there working on the brakes it would probably be a good idea to replace the seals, might save you some time down the road.
The leak at the steering column seems pretty common. The control valve for the power steering resides below the dash on the column. If it is worn out it may be the source of the leak. I have seen others on here who put a new top seal in only to have it leak again. Not to scare you but parts for the power steering on these tractors are expensive but with a front end loader you NEED the power steering. When I got my 202 someone had removed all the hoses and hyd. cylinders for the power steering system. The valve was worn beyond repair and pitted from the ports being left open. I was looking at the better part of $1600 to get it all working again. I ended up designing my own power steering system using the loader hydraulics and a CharLynn power steering valve. Now with the bucket fully loaded with gravel (or anything else) I can steer it with one finger.

I have a 1981 205 Industrial with Loader.
I have all the manuals. I recommend the parts manual. It
shows more details and exploded views. I also recommend
getting your serial numbers ready and markup your manuals
as to exactly what Engine as well as other parts like the
breaks. They. Seam t have made many changes to the 205
over the years.

I think a 205 from 1981 would be a completely different animal, too different for the manuals to be helpful.

You have the Japanese built 205 compact tractor. They have nothing in common except the model number. 205 Workbulls were made in the 60s.

The tractor in the picture above looks exactly like mine. The valve for the bucket is slightly different and the bucket itself is slightly different. Other than that it looks identical to my 1981 205 industrial.

If it looks identical then you do not have a 1981 tractor. The 205 industrial tractors were built from 1961 to 1969. If you post your serial number it can be narrowed down even further. Or make a trip to the tractordata site. Here is a link to the 205
