6600Transmission / replacing shifter fork.

I am trying to replace the 2nd/reverse shifting fork on a Ford 6600. Not sure if I need to split the transmission or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I remember correctly, you have to make a front split to change that fork.

happened to our 5000,which has a tranny close to a 6600 . Can't remember if we split it in front but know we split it at the back and there is a breather pipe to hassel with and we couldn't get a new one.

Replacing the lower fork requires a rear split. Replacing the upper arm also requires a rear split. However, not wanting to do that on a cab tractor, I took a new rail, cut in in half, and re-threaded it together on a lathe. I now had a two-piece rail. I cut the old one out through the top, removed the old arm, inserted new arm, and inserted new two-piece rail. Saves a lot of time.

No cab on tractor. I got the old fork assembly almost out. Just need to slip it past the 1st gear rail. With surgeon-like hands and the patience of an saint, is it possible to get the fork in? I have never done a rear split and would like to avoid if possible. Or maybe it is not that bad to do the rear split???? Any thoughts or pointers on doing the rear split. Thanks for the help.

If the old fork is broken, you might get it out without splitting the tractor. It would depend of course on where it's broke.

Getting the new one in is, well, not gonna happen without a split, unless you have some unusual clearance in your case. Trust me, I've tried, and haven't been able to do it.

A rear split is not that bad. Getting the thing back together is usually the toughest part. Do NOT force it back together, or you'll screw up the PTO clutch.

Once the tractor is split, you will remove the rear cover, remove the rear gears, and then remove the 4-8 sliding gear, and then that should give you the clearance you need to install the fork.

i recently had the same problems had to split front and rear. also be sure to check for metal shavings really really good. shavings got in the dual power in mine and warped the clutches.
