686 injector removal

need to remove fuel injectors from 310 engine on 686 & have them checked. i know these engines smoke but ours smokes a lot, even under full throttle. it's not using coolant or oil. what is the best way to take them out. any special tools required. i know the coolant should be drained from the block to be on the safe side if a tube or sleeve pulls out when injectors are removed to prevent coolant from entering the piston area. i know a mechanic who will come over & take them out but would like to save some money if possible. tractor does run good but starts hard below 50 or so. did replace thermostat because engine was running too cool but it didn't help w/the excess smoking.

thanks, dennis

Has the air cleaner been checked for problems, maybe mister mouse has a new home. I would see if the smoke is less at high idle with the filters out for testing only, if smoke is less replace the filters. If no change then pull the injectors for service.

Air cleaner is good so it looks like the injectors need to be pulled. Do I need a slide hammer to get them out if they're really stuck.

A slide hammer will pull out the injector sleeves for sure. First clean around them and soak them up with your favorite penetrating oil. I think they are clamp in style on the 686 so start by working the injector back and forth and respraying with oil. With a little patience they almost always come out with the sleeve staying in the head. If the sleeve does come out it takes a special tool to install a new sleeve.

I don't have a slide hammer anyway or the tool to put the sleeves back in so I'll try taking them out by hand.

Thanks, Dennis
