6volt vs 8volt battery

Question need a new batt in my 8n it has a 8v
batt now.. the previous owner said a 8 volt batt
will last longer thats why he put it in (its 4
years old)...my question is should i use a 6 volt
or stick with a 8 volt is it ok to use a 8 volt
being a 6 v charging system Thanks

use the 6 volt, since your tractor has a 6 volt generator your only going to be charging 6 volts not 8, go buy the battery at a carquest or napa explain what its going in and get the most cranking amps you can, then, if you keep your eletricial connections clean bright and tight, and keep yout tractor in proper tune, you will never have any problem starting with 6 volts
 
First, your generator will take care of either, but may need a bit of adjusting if you go back to 6 volts.

The reason many folks upped the voltage from 6 to 8 was to increase cranking speed in order to make starting easier. This is a band-aid approach. If all the cables are correctly sized and in good condition, and all the connections are clean and bright (especially between the starter and the bell housing), your engine will crank well and start reliably on 6 volts.

On the other hand, there is no harm in sticking with 8 volts, either. The battery is probably more expensive, depending on where you find one.

As for the battery life, 4 years isn't particularly long for a battery to last, and the voltage has nothing to do with that issue -- EXCEPT that the generator and cutout need to be properly adjusted so you don't "cook" the battery by over-charging it. It's possible that the voltage was upped for the 8-volt battery, and was upped too far, thus shortening the battery life.
 
Get out your meter. If your v/r has been tweaked to charge that 8v battery, you should see about 9.4v. If you see 7.2v or so, your v/r hasn't been tweaked & that 8v battery is no better than the 6v battery that is supposed to be there. And, tweaking a v/r isn't all that hard as long as you are prepared for the consequences of failure: a boiled battery, burned up v/r or no charge at all.

I'd clean all the grounds, replace the battery cables & either convert it to 12v or get it back to 6v. That 8v battery is going to burn up your points & lights &, if it's a frontmount, probably your coil as well.

It works like this.......technology & materials being what they were in the 30's, that square coil would melt if it ran on much more than 4 amps for any length of time. (see tip # 38 for an example). In order to get a hot spark at the same time the starter was drawing max current from the battery, a ballast resistor was added in the ignition circuit. What that did was add about .3 ohms of resistance in the circuit, added to the 1.5 ohms of the coil. That got you 3.5 amps or so at start up. As the voltage increased when the engine was running to about 7.5 volts, the resistor heated up, adding more resistance in the circuit. 1.0 ohms hot, plus 1.5 ohms of the coil got you down to 3 amps or so to keep from melting the coil. The same rule (actually, Ohm's Law) applies to a 8v circuit. I= E/R. Current equals voltage divided by resistance. So, 9.4v divided by 2.5 ohms gets you 3.76 amps. The difference of nearly 1 amp means more heat in that front coil.

And, the increase is worse for light bulbs.

Now I'm sure we will hear from folks who are using 8v batteries w/ no problems. That's not unheard of by any means.....but why bother?

I could hand crank the engine fine.

I got some new battery cables and cable to the starter which fixed it.

It really cranks up well now. I've got the original 6v system, and with the new cables it cranks up like it did when I had to jump it from a 12v back when I picked up the tractor from my grandfather earlier this summer.

It starts up immediately. Previously it had the original 1947 cables, which upon inspection had the inner strand wires corroded/severed.

Some of you guys thinking of doing a 12V conversion, if you don't need the 12V for some other electronics, might just need replacement battery cables.”

Bruce is 100% dead on right - 8 volts is a "cheap" bandaid fix for a simple problem. On a 6 volt system, small and unclean cables and connections are almost always the problem. The volt meter will tell you quickly to keep the 8 or go back to a 6. Simplicity is simple, people try to fix a simple situation by throwing $$$$ at it, when a good ol' cleaning and rechecking is all it takes.
 
Chris.......battery cables should be 1/0-ga (one-ought) thick as yer thumb. NOT wimpy ferrin' 12v 4ga. Use NEW 11-in flatbraid grounded to the tractor steering gearbox castiron attach bolt 'sedda' rusty sheetmetal battery tray. .......Dell
 
I bought a tractor (8N side mount) that had an 8 volt battery in it. The seller said it was better than 6 volts, etc,etc. It started great and the lights were bright. Of course after a while the battery failed because the gen couldn't keep it charged. I replaced it with a 6 volt battery. Still going; starts great but light aren't as bright. Moral of the story - stick with the six volts or go to 12 and replace the gen with an alterntor.
 
6 volt but make sure you get a tractor battery. Go to a farm store or tractor dealer. John Deere is one of the few left that will know what you're talking about. Tractors don't have any suspension, other than the tires. That battery is in for a rough ride. Car batteries won't hack it for the long haul.
 
I hope they last longer as I paid nearly $100.00 for this one. The 8N had a 8 volt in it when I bought it a couple years ago. No telling when it was bought as there was no date code on it. The generator would charge the battery to a little over 9 volts so I suspect the regulator had been tweeked. As stated, see if your generator is charging at 7+ or 9+ volts and buy your battery accordingly. David.............
