7.3 Diesel

I hope some of you guys can help me out a little.I"m about to trade for an F350 with the 7.3 diesel,and wanted to know if you think that is a good choice.It"s an older truck with about 150,000 miles.Never owned a diesel so i thought i might give it a try it"s a non turbo.Well everyone have a Great Thanksgiving,and God Bless you all.

Darby, I have a '88 F350 mounted with an Altec bucket/boom that I use for tree work. Not sure of mileage but a lot as it was previously a Bell South telephone service truck, the 7.3 is a strong engine an relatively trouble free IMHO, However it cannot hold a light to the performance of my '99 Super duty F250 with the 7.3 Turbo.

I've heard the turbo makes a huge differents,I would mostly be using it just to pull my car trailer and camper.

I've had one for 15 years and while it seems a little "underpowered" at 160 horsepower, compared to the turbo diesels nowdays, I REALLY have been happy with it.

2 tips for cold weather;

1. Keep your batteries up. This engine NEEDS a fast spin to fire.

2. Keep your glowplugs hot. I can always tell if there are more than one not working.

I have about twice the miles as the one you are looking at, and still use the truck everyday on the farm.

sounds like it just broken in. my 93 f250 7.3 has 345000 miles on it.shes not a rocket but i pulled 15000#'s behind her.good luck with yours

Happy ThanksGiving I have worked on LOTS of ford diesesl and only the the newer ones are haveing problems In late 1984 people thought the 6.9L were great with very little problems then when the 7.3L was introduced it was even better and then a turbo WOW. Then in 1995 when they had the 7.3L Direct Injected Turbo kept getting better??? Well not if u have to remove the turbo what an idiot design!!!!!!! But very good engine. Then the power Stroke I have always been a ford fan but when they left the 7.3L they have been going down hill. I just hope this new 6.7L is going to be better.

Like others have said it wouldn't be a race truck,but a truck that would probably be around for many more years. 150,000 is nothing for a diesel. If the truck was well taken care of for those miles you should be in good shape.
