7000 planter monitors

I'm curious what everyones opinions are as to monitors for 7000 JD planters. This 7000 I'm getting needs a new monitor and I don't know what I should get for it. I think the old one was a Dickey Johns. The planter is a 12 row.

Is there anything that will have to be changed from the original equipment to make a new monitor work correctly? Sensors and seed tubes?

Thanks in advance.

I bought a used jd 12r monitor with population for $50.00 and found a 12r DJ w/o pop. at a swap meet for $5.00. If the plugs are the same it should work.

Well, I found a place called Haukos Bros Inc. online that supposedly carries all kinds of parts including monitors for 7000's but after emailing them twice still no reply. Maybe they don't need any business, lol.

@dboll: So are you looking to sell either one of those monitors or are you just saying they are pretty easy to find?

I use the jd mon. on my 10rn and bought the other for a spare. Haukus isn't cheap 320-864-5156, you should be able to find one, I found the jd mon. by placing an add on craigslist, can the current one be repaired? population and acre counter is nice but you can get by without it.

No, the old one is non existent, lol. The planter comes with no monitor. Haukos show several monitors starting at like $250, I thought that was ok but if you found one for $50 I'm re-thinking that assessment, lol.
There's a tractor salvage yard near to me here that I can check, I know they have some parts for the planter as I have already checked on a seed box thats cracked.

By Glencoe, they have a pretty good reputaton, they probably are more phoner type people than electronic media, I'd give them a jingle instead of email. Haven't worked with them, but hear good things. They are big with planter converstions.

How much are you planting? Are these monitors tested/certified? I would be concerned about a $5 swap meet monitor....good for a core, IMO....

what the H difference does it make? consoles can be tested and if all the pretty little orange lights go out theres a good chance it's planting. I just a dummy that don't know nuthin.for the record I plant a 10rn long patch of sweetcorn 50' long, thinking about farming more this year probably will go 75' long

the 2020 precision monitor is the best by far. it will tell population, singulation, spaceing, down pressure and more. anyone serious about doing the best job of planting needs one. it will cost you but so do mistakes. most guys that have got one have told me it payed for it self in a year or less due to un seen issues or operator error! if you want a cheap pop monitor sensor one has them

Yes. They are good people. Straight shooters. I bought a couple wheel hubs for my old 400 IH. from them and looked at a 1200 they had for sale. It was as they had described on phone.

Yeah, I've heard that a lot. Seems to be the best...hands down. I'm not planning on shelling out $5500 any time soon for just a monitor though. I might consider it next season, this season I need to focus on buying the planter and reconditioning it so it works better than what I had.
If I can get a cheaper monitor for this season that tells me row functionality and plant population I'll be happy for this year. I had an idea that the precision 20/20 was what I would be told if I asked what monitor was best. However what I need right now is what monitor is best for under $1000 which obviously excludes the 20/20, lol.

I know best is best but I can surely get by okay with simple work or not indicators and plant population for now. I've planted for years without a monitor at all on old plate planters so I should be fine with something simple...no?

Haha, well I called everyone near me that I could think of an no luck with a monitor. Prcision could set me up with a $6000+ rig but no thanks. I called Kalsem and they said they could get me fixed up and well within my budget!

The guy said the 7000 was a very very good planter and IHO I was doing very well with my "deal". I'm pretty excited now, thanks for all the input from you all here on the forum. Been a huge help!
Good luck to everyone here in 2011!

get by yes, have a good crop yes, the reason i push these is i have seen some very good operators have problems and change the way they do things because they know what is going on back there. a 7000 can do a great job when working right (better than a new jd standard vac) but they are touchy about speed and seed size and shape. sometimes little changes can make a difference. and there is no better way to know than a 2020

Yeah I see what you mean. Talked to my JD dealer today as well. They can get me setup with an M3 monitor and sensors and harness for about $2200. Maybe that would be a better solution, certainly better than $5500 for the 20/20 monitor alone. Guy at precision said that was monitor alone by the time we got it set up complete I would be looking at closer to 10K probably. No way thats happening, before I put that kind of money into a planter setup I would go in hock for a much newer setup through my IH dealer or just lease one. I'll work within the budget I allowed and live with that for this year and maybe next.

Birdman , Try Ag Express they can get you a complete setup. You need to check the planter out and see if is has the planter half of the monitor harness and seed sensors. This did have a monitor on it??? If it did then know what plug your harness has on it. They can match a monitor to it.

Also these people are good at repairing Baler monitors too.
