I just got 706D farmall it starts just fine but it blows white smoke from idle to full throttle I thought cracked head but there is no oil in the water any help would be good

Does this just happen when it's cold?

If it's happening when warm does it clear up when under a load?

If your oil and water levels aren't changing more than normal and no cross contamination it's probably unburnt fuel.

Unburnt fuel can come from a number of reasons but curious why you think its a cracked head?

The cracked head could cause a loss of compression and incomplete combustion - Do you see bubbles in the coolant? Lot of blow by from the crankcase breather?

Starting with the easiest first
- check for a dirty air cleaner
- check for worn or broken injectors
- compression test (706's do have a cracking problem)
- injection pump (timing or mechanical issue)

Kind of puzzled as you say it starts fine - would lead me to think worn injectors as something making it hard to start would relate to lower compression (crack, worn rings or valves). possibly only 1 cylinder with a problem?

What are you using the tractor for?

Hard to say if its best to just leave it alone or have something that needs fixing fixed.

Since it starts easy and your only using it to move stuff around the yard including snow I'd tend to live with the excessive smoke as your not really putting it under a load

Keep checking the water and oil for abnormal usage or that you have more than before

Water turns oil into milk and diesel thins it out so if your oil smells like diesel or looks like milk change it

And you know what oil in water looks like

Keep an eye on it and it might last quite a while. Easy starting is a good sign

(quoted from post at 23:16:58 10/10/13) Thanks for the help there is no oil in the water but I will smellit to see if there is any fuel in the oil

White is water, blue oil, black unburned diesel.

I think you have condensation somewhere that can get into the combustion chamber. I think you need to get your biggest plow and put the tractor in the highest gear it can handle, aka lug it for an hour, and then come back tomorrow and see if you still have white smoke. You hear from time to time of similar problems from folks like you that have a tractor that gets little use and at that, no work.

While you're at it check your water separator in your fuel filter. And you might drain some fuel into a container and let it sit for a day. If water in it, it should be at the bottom.

Mark
