706 Gas electrical problem

Try this then since you are having V.R. problems. Run a hot wire from the ignition side of the battery to the ignition side of the coil. Try to start it. If it starts and runs good then you have a problem in the wiring and the charging system may be shorting out taking power away from the ignition system

Will do

Well if you had bot a horse like that we would call it barn sour. Just have to take it back to the farm where you got it. Lol. Wonder if you drove it more than 10 minutes before you bot it? Probably why the seller was selling it.

We ran it for about 30 minutes or so, and everything on it was working well, but a 2 hour drive home on the pothole infested roads of PA can be tough on equipment. Reguardless of the sale, it’s 58 years old, its gonna have some problems here and there.

Okay, as it stands, there was a blockage in the fuel petcock, which is fixed, that was causing the surging and shutting off, the no charging was the faulty VR, it runs continuously now, with a slight miss here and there, carb is clean, fuel lines cleaned and fresh ethanol free fuel, charging system it working again, it runs the worst going downhill or turning the throttle down, with some white/grey smoke, and a miss, where would you look next, coil, and distributor are original, and ran good before all the trouble, spark plug wires all look good, spark plugs were all replaced

Idling down and going down hill are high vacuum situations. Because you have low operating hours as its owner, you may have discovered a valve guide issue. grey smoke is likely oil consumption from higher vacuum in the intake manifold and head (where the intake valve stems are protruding. Valve seals might help that. (can be cone without removing the head. Jim
