706 steering

Hi I have a 706 that is not getting any oil to the steering motor. The tractor has set about a year and a half. I thought it was the flow divider valve possibly stuck so I pulled it out and it was kinda stuck but that didnt help the steering. I also noticed that when I pulled out the orfice plug on the back of the mcv I didnt see the priority valve orfice. I was just curious what is in there if anything. Any ideas are helpful.

Well how long did you allow it to run ?? Next did you check the hyd. oil level?? When was the last time that the hyd. filter changed. and was the gskt.changed at the same time . It is always wise to use a new gskt when changing the hyd. filter . When you removed the steering orifice plug was the engine running at that time ?? what is behind that plug is a orifice that sends three gallon a min to the steering system . and being that the tractor has be4en setting for and extended time frame She may be a real bear to get to take prime . So (1) make sure it is up on hyd. fluid and being three to five gallon OVER FULL will not hurt a thing and if it is by chance sucking air someplace between the rearend at the pick up tube to the hyd. filter or the O/Ring between the spped transmission and the range transmission it will pick up the prime . (2) start and run the engine at 1500-2000 Rpm for a couple min, and see if it will pick up prime alos turn the steering wheel to the LEFT and keep doing so while the engine is running as this will help bleed any air from the MCV system .

Thanks Vet I have let it run some When I was turning it but I will try again. I did not see anything in behind the orfice plug. I did not know if there is something in there that will come out or could be plugged or both possibly. vAlso dont know if it makes any difference if the hyd pressure is good at the outlets or not but I have 2500psi at the outlets. Thanks Vet if you want you could call me 620-704-2110. You have been a big help on a few projects I have been workin on and just wanna say thank you.

yes it was running when i removed the orfice plug i also loosened the priority valve while it was running. oil did not run out of either when i did so. it is a little over full on oil. i was wondering if there could possibly be a valve stuck someplace? thanks

Ah the remotes are on the hitch pump and has nothing to do with the MCV .. The orifice is screwed into the MCV valve body and sets back in a little ways from the plug. Now as for the valves keep in mind that behind them plugs are SPRINGS and a couple are pretty heavy . As for maybe a stuck valve yea it could be as i have had a couple that were stuck and have given fits on brakes and steering .And if i suspect a problem with the MCV i will drain the system down and pull it and get it up on the bench and put in the vice so i can control the removal of the plugs and springs better . Then i can check free lenght of the springs and check movement of the valves. Now if you do choose to remove the MCV from the tractor then becareful not to loose thew sump check plug and spring that are in the lower righthand corner behind the MCV. Also check the thickness of the gskt. that goes between the MCV and the Speed transmission housing for what5 thickness it is and replace with the same . Also remember to replace the O/Ring on the left side also . Ya don't know how many times people forget that one . Setting down and reading over the book on the MCv is a big plus here .

Thanks Vet. I pulled out the releif and the pump started pumping after the tractor had ran about 30 seconds with that out so I then put the relief back in and the steering worked great I drove it up the road a ways and around the yard some and laoded it on my trailer to go wash it up to check other things over and when I went to unload it the steering would not work again. So I took out the plug and no oil so now I am back at it. This is all just my luck I think I should learn to buy things that are all working properly. I will try to let you know what I find. I am gonna change the hyd. filter again it may have picked up bunch of junk when it went up on the trailer. The oil looks like new that is in it. Thanks much for your help.

Thanks Vet for your help. I had the steering working but it has now stopped again. I pulled out the relief plug and started the tractor and after a few seconds bout 30 I would guess of the tractor running it started pumping oil out so I replaced the plug and fired it up. steering was working perfectly. So I load it on a trailer to go wash her up a bit and when I returned home I had no steering again. I ahve pulled out the relief and have good oil there pulled, out the orfice plug while running have good oil there pulled out the valve above the orfice plug which I think is the proirity valve and it is free to move. Is the nost thing to pull the valve between the batteries apart again? I also dont know if I said or not but this is a farmall 706. Dont know if that matters either. Thank you much.
