I am looking at a 720 electric start John Deere and it is a electric start. The serial number is 7224523 and i wanted to know if this was an original electric start or a conversion. Are these tractor rare compared to the pony start? Thanks for the help. Scott

If it had a pony at one time the hood will have and access door on the right side at the back of the hood unless the hood is not original either but that seems unlikely.

The parts book show where the ser# when it became an option. Not sure if there is a complete list of those somewhere ? There were around 2500 ? built.

There are several differences in the factory direct starts besides the hood. The dash casting is different, it doesnt have a spot for the throttle/choke controls of the pony. A factory will also have a foot pedal for a compression release rather than two levers. Good luck with it, a factory EL start is a nice find.

I knew of one that was a pony converted to ES. They were a tractor jockey so they went to the trouble of changing many parts including the hood.
I figure yours to be original, they are a lower number tractor but not considered "rare".
