720 Gas

Hi:
I have a 720 gas that I am resoring and had a couple of questions.First I"m trying to figure the year,I was told it was a 1957 the serial # is 7201166 can anyone tell me what year it is?When I bought it it didn"t have fenders on it but the guy gave me a pair of flat top fenders that he had laying around they look like the one that would be on a 3020,did the 720 ever come out with flat top fenders and if not would it look out of place to put them on the 720 they have the grab hole and 4 headlights.Also it has round JD wide front and I see some with square front end whats the dif other than shape?Thank you in advance.

Tim, your 720 was built in the 1956 calendar year, sold as a 1957. Round tube wide fronts were used on earlier numbered series (50, 60, 70) AND on the early 20 series, probably until inventory was used up. You're right, most have square tubes. 20 series tractors never came from the factory with deluxe fenders (like the 3020). They were offered with clam shell fenders. However, the deluxe fenders will fit the tractor with slight modification if the brackets were for a new generation tractor. If you are wanting to do a "shade tree" restoration and give it a new paint job and some stickers, go with the flat tops. If you really want to restore the tractor (expo quality), leave the fenders off, get some Jordes decals, and take it to a local shop or dealer or email me.

Tim, here in Texas I do not recall any JD's or Farmall's having fenders that I was around. That was any tractor from the unstyled B to the 720 and the H and M Farmall. I don't know if it was the cost or the black land mud that would most likely remove them for you if they were on the tractor. Massy Harris and Ford were the only ones I recall with fenders. I agree the clamshells are the correct ones for the 720 if you use them.
