730 12 Volt starter

Has anyone used a 12 volt truck starter in place of the orginal 24 volt starter on 730 Diesel. With the compression release, I believe it would work, with a 12 volt generator or alt. Thank you for your help . Tim.

May work if the operator makes a slam start on a warm day.
The starting engines made 14HP and most of use have seen them labour to roll 376 cu" under compression in cold weather .
How powerful is the starting system on diesels that bring 188cu" or 236cu" of displacement to TDC on the compression stroke .fast enough to make enough heat to fire a spray of fuel oil?
That would be a 1128cu" engine with up to 600HP or 1413 cu" engine with up to about 700HP.
What is the starter on those engines? A 24V Delco MT42 or a 12V Delco MT50. The system will use two group 31 or larger batteries in the south. 3 or 4 batteries in cold weather.
With heavy 2/00 cables, a pair of 1000CAA group 31 batteries and a Delco MT39 or MT44 .It will start half decent but will have no where near 14HP .
The factory 24V system will work if kept in repair. Battery draining can be stopped with a 2nd starting solenoid or a isolation switch on the battery chassis connection.
