my ford keeps losing it's prime.I try to pump the lever by the fuel pump with the bleeder nut loose on the filter housing, but it seems to not work.
Is my pump bad?Can I try to manually pour fuel in the filter to get it started? thanks

Is it a series I or II, with cab or without?

If its a series I check the fuel level in the top tank. I've never been able to get very deep in the bottom tank and 3 of mine are set up like that. Those pumps go bad, leaky fittings (air can get into places fuel cant leak out of). For me, I got rid of all my tanks under the step and just let the top tank carry the load.

If its a series II cab (I got one of those with no top tank) I had random problems with it not holding prime and it was a nightmare to bleed the filters. I ended up putting a 12v pump inline to lift fuel from the bottom tank since the top tank gravity help wasnt an option

I dealt with one like that once where it had the damdest little air leak. I just happened to look at the water separator bowl at the right moment and saw an air bubble lift off the drain cock. It wasn't leaking fuel either...

Yes, you can fill the filter. That's what I generally do. Also, if you have an upper tank, fill it before you try bleeding the thing again.

It's a series 2 with cab-made in England. Is the lever on the pump designed to lift the fuel from the bottom tank?I took an air hose with low pressure and blew through the line after it was disconnected from the pump and had gurgling from the tank so I assume the line is unobstructed.I guess I'll try to fill the filter or put an inline pump on it.

I think that the fuel pump with the lever on it has some check valves in it. Sometimes they will get some trash in them and cannot completely close. And this lets the tractor lose its prime. I had a Case 4230 and the primer pump had some trash in it and the tractor would lose its prime over night. I changed the primer pump and it worked okay.

well, this is what I come up with-I disconnected the line at the top of the pump and tried to crank the motor and got no fuel coming out.Disconnected the bottom line and seen there was no fuel there either.I took a suction gun and rigged it up to the top of the pump with the bottom line hooked back up and got the fuel to come out of the top of the pump. From there I got fuel to go out the filter by using the lever on the pump.Whalla! got it started! I did notice that the valve on the bottom of the fuel tank was turned out a few rounds.Maybe this was a small air leak that was the culprit all the while.I'll just keep my fingers crossed and see what happens. Thanks again for the replies.
