801 Powermaster - 841 Diesel

My husband recently purchased a Powermaster 801 series tractor....it is a 4 speed, diesel and from checking out the numbers, it seems to be a 1958. Painted over decals show Powermaster 801, but am sure from doing my research it's an 841. Couple of questions.....
1) Do all diesels have a vertical exhaust pipe?
2) Do all 801 series tractors use the same air cleaner assembly or are there different ones? Ours has one that is mounted to the hood and I swear it's the same assembly that is on my 52 JD MT......no green jokes, boys!!
3) What fluids should be used for the hyd., tranny, and diff? The fluid is milky white (water) when the dipstick is pulled and was not sure if we had seperate resovoirs for each of these or not?!
4) How much fluid is needed for each?
5) We want to change the oil too, what weight?

We've only had it for about 5 days, so I haven't ordered a manual for it and I know I could ask the local FNH dealer, but I'd rather ask the REAL Pros!!

I came here to this site for info on my JD, when I acquired it and everyone was so very helpful and I know I'll be back for both of our tractors very often! Thanks in advance for the help!!

Yes.. an 801 with a 4spd would be an 841

If diesel, then use a good deisel engine oil.. many people here like the 'C' rated 15w40.

The hyds, diffy, and trans are different sumps.

You -can- use UTF fluid meeting M2C134D for all 3 sumps.. or you can use gear oil in the diffy, gear oil in the trans.. and UTF or HYD oil like an aw46/65 in the hyds. i prefer UTF in the hyds myself.

Hyds have a dipstick behind your left heel. Fill-up for the hyds is under your left thigh.. big cap. diffy has a level check pipe plug on the rear o f the left axle trumpet. fill-up is under your right but cheek.. big cap. Trans fill up is on the trans cover and there is a check plug behind your right heel.. pipe plug.

get an I&T fo-20 manual to give you the amounts if you want to know them.. or just fill till correct level via stick/check plug.

Gear oil like 80w90 is fine to use along with the UTF oil i mentioned.

Yeah.. the diesel air cleaner is a neat looking contraption..

if it is the canister oil filter / element.. then it takes a napa 1004 or a fram ch6pl

if it is a spin on oil filter.. a anap 1452, or 1515 will fit.. or a motorcraft fl1a.. or a fram ph8a.. etc.

I'm not enough of an authority to answer all your questions, but I'll answer what I can.
1)No, some have hoizontal exhaust.
2)There are at least 3 styles of air cleaner for the 801, depending on which year and whether it's gas or diesel.
3)You'll get different answers as to what oil to use. There are 3 separate reservoirs, but the seals between often leak after so many years. I use NH 134 (or equivalant) in all 3 sumps of my Jubilee, so if it mixes, it won't matter.
4) not sure... if you have an owners manual, it's in there.
5)Opinions on engine oil weight will vary too. Depends partly on your climate and intended use of your tractor. I run 15w40 diesel rated oil in all of my tractors. (5 quarts there with the filter change - I know that one!)

Soundguy-

What about the 134D hyd fluid I've seen on this forum??
So the air cleaner on our tractor is NORMAL?? Coulda fooled me!

Never mind about the 134, just re-read the posts and realized what it was.....it's a universal TRANS fluid, correct?
Is the gear oil 80w90 what would be suggested for the gear oil?

Quarts. 6 Gal should change all the fluids.
You can fill it higher if you run several hydraulic cyl, extend all the cyl and then fill to full mark on the dip stick.
These tractors did not have a large sump.
Good luck.

I have never seen a hundred series diesel, or even a photo of one with exhaust underneath the tractor. But I sure wouldn't say that there couldn't be some somewhere.

But I don't think I would want diesel exhaust spewing out behind my tractor right below the axle housing. It seems like a much better idea to shoot it straight up where hopefully the wind might blow it away. Diesel exhaust stinks.

To say nothing about the time my exhaust system decided to clean itself out of accumulated deposits the first time I plowed in several years. I had fire at least 10 feet above the top of the exhaust pipe, which was kind of scary, but didn't actually cause any real danger or damage. Don't think that would have been too good if the fire had been pointed out the back of the tractor though!

There are several different air cleaner schemes for the diesels. The important thing is to use the right oil in a clean air cleaner and to change the dirty oil as needed. The other thing is to make sure there are no leaks between the air cleaner and the intake manifold.

I think you will like your diesel. Good luck!

Thanks Hal! We going to leave the diesel the way it is as far as a vertical exhaust pipe, we'll just put one on it that looks more like the orginal. My personal concern was that the air cleaner assembly looked like it belonged on my JD MT, it's the same exact housing.....seemed like something NOT of Ford stock....my questioning amounted to whether or not that air assembly was correct???!!!!! I believe FordFarmer said there were 3 depending on gas or diesel....but I just want something orig. on it instead of a added assembly!

Here's an answer to a question you didn't ask. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I believe the Powwermaster decal is inocrrect for this tractor. There is an 801 Diesel decal for this tractor rather than the 801 Powermaster decal.

I saw that decal package too, I assume maybe in its past that the hood/fender might have been replaced if that is incorrect! I at least know it's probably a 1958 b/c of date codes on the trany and diff....year end is 8. So we'll see, guess I could load some photos.....
