805 Steering

My 805 had a lot of slack in the steering, about a quarter turn each way. Removed the top steering tube to replace the bearings and it had a stack of shims totaling .060. I replaced the bearings and races and cleaned out the crud. When I replaced the tube with the recommended shims the tube wasn't close to touching so I added another shim for a total of .015. It bolted down but is way to tight,I have no end play. I am wondering if I have the wrong bearings as I remember reading an article on this forum that there are bearings out there that are not quite right. Will it hurt to just keep adding shims, maybe the whole stack will need to go back. The part I received for the very top bearing is a hard donut looking thing,is this a new replacement part for that bearing ? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Gary

sounds like you ordered the horendouns nylon 1 piece bearing.

IMHO.. it's make to replace the race and all and that's why it is not fitting.

I'd NEVER disgrace one of my machines with that junky POS plastic bearing.

get the real metal one..

then once installed, lube the box and adjust the sector backlash..

OK I will get the steel top bearing but that wasnt the reason the top cover wouldn't close up, as it wasn't installed. Do I keep adding shims until I get the required end play?

if the top bearing wasn't even in, the top cover should drop right down on the housing, and the wornshaft should have at least 1/4 to 3/8 " play.

if not.. then you migh not have the wormshaft centered in it's lower race.. or there might be an old roller from the previous bearing under the wormshaft.

somtin ain't right.. pull apart and inspect..

i've had a dozen of those ford manual boxes apart.. and without a top bearing the top column should lay flat on the top of the steering box

post back what ya find.

Thanks for the suggestions,I will tear it down this weekend and post back. I'm still wondering if I have the wrong bearings.

SG - he said he replaced them so am wondering if he got them fully seated. Top one I recall goes beyond flush with upper cover...by about a few shims :)
