Wanted to update, mainly so it's in the
archives here. I search those a lot for
answers and am glad when someone posts
their solution.
Brief recap- I was working on the pony
engine on an 820 and it ran on the back 2
cylinders, but not the front 2. I rebuilt
the carb, verified good fuel flow, cleaned
the points. I finally swapped out the guts
from a known running pony engine to
eliminate the coils as a problem, but
then had no spark at all, and I quit for a
while.
Today I got back to the tractor to try
again. Did a compression check, all the
cylinders showed the same. I notice the
wire from one of the coils to the
condensers was broken. I'm guessing that's
why I had no spark at the end of the day
last time. I don't know how to solder so I
swapped one of the original coils back in.
I also charged the battery back up (I had
read on this site that full voltage is
important) and I set the point gaps at
.020 with a feeler gauge, and cleaned them
with brake cleaner and air. Cranked it
over and had a heck of a spark now.
Cranked the engine over, it now ran on
THREE cylinders....getting better!!
I pulled the last spark plug, which was
wet with fuel and oil. Cleaned it up,
reinstalled, and tried again. BINGO, all 4
are firing and it sounds great.
So, new plugs, good battery, proper point
gap, and checked the wires. One or all of
those things was my answer.
