830 Horsepower Increase

My sons and i have a 830 2 cyclinder that we re working on and have the motor apart. There are standard pistons in it now and the block looks good. We are wanting to add HP. What is the best way, bore size, aluminum pistons, injections pumps rebuild, nozzle changes? Looking for any ideas that would help. Looking to be between 85 to 100 hp. Trying to make a competitive puller for my sons to pull with. Thanks,Scott

100hp is possible at stock cid with 730/830 style pistons and matching injectors. If your pistons are good, re-use them with new rings. If not, go to 6 3/8 bore. Marlin (2-Cylinder Diesel Shop), Jones, or Grimes can get you the power with a fuel system.

I've heard of 1,200 cu in 820/830 pullers...

Have you seen the "Full Strut" videos on you tube..??
Very impressive Power..!!
As with most other Builds, an Improved Cam will be a good idea..and Plenty work on the Intake and Head Porting..

730 pistons have chamber volume of 140cc's while 830 pistons have chamber volume of 190cc's. all 2 cylinder diesel pistons ,r,720 820, have the same pin height

putting 730 pistons in an 830 will jump compression ratio past 19 to 1 from 16 to 1 which will raise efficiency thus power .

getting rid of oil bath and some port work will get you over 100 horsepower but not by much . biggest gains in power will come with increase in cubes .

But you will need expensive fuel modifications to feed those big cubes.Paul

There is somebody out there that casts a solid no water jacket over size block for that series.
Airflow is everything. port matched head/manifolds, blended valve bowls, 5 angle valve jogs, dry air cleaner and re-ground cam are all required.
The higher compression 730 pistons will allow the cam grinder to improve flow with more duration without loosing too much compression pressure.

Videos can sometimes be deceiving. That tractor looks nice and runs well, but there is an 800+ ci 830 around here that will run circles around it. A good tight engine with some head and intake work and fuel system tuning (turning pumps up) will make more improvements than anything else-a very good return on investment.

I agree about the video. Not saying there isn't power there, but I don't think there is that much.

With 18.4 38 tires and those RPMs, he isn't going that fast. I would guess 2nd gear. At 7500 or 8500 lb any decent 830 should handle 2nd gear.

Again, not saying there isn't power there, but RPMs and fire don't mean 1000 cubes or 150+ HP.

The best bang for your buck would be the 730 pistons and a simple hone job to round things out and fresh compression rings. Fresh wrist pins... modified injector nozzels and maybe a breath more fuel.

I can give you the guys number for rings and nozzel work if you'd like. He also has a flow bench and can work your head. Just depends on how much you want to spend.

I have an 800 ci 820 that he made the parts for, but you're gonna be spending some pretty big cabbage to go that route and there are some time consuming alterations you need to make to the case and some other misc. If you're pony start like mine then there are more mods required. I'm told that I'm making about 200hp.

The 1350 -ish cubic inch motors are stroked in addition to what the 800 ci engine is. That's a big bucket of worms opened up there to make that happen. You have to open up the transmission divider of the case and do all kind of crazy stuff.

Here's a couple pictures...
The second is a practice pull on a dead sled that we guessed at close to 30,000 lbs.

I know, but they sure DO put on a mighty fine show.

Actually, I am plenty happy to see them pull when they (any type) is nearly Original..or depending on class..

Even an "R" JD is an awesome machine working in a Field..4x16" Pull-Type in 2nd and 3rd all day long on not much fuel..
Wonder if anyone has any pictures of an "R", 80 or 820/830 with Duals on it..??
Would look like a Mean machine..!!

Ron.
