I am in the market for an 84" finish mower to use behind my International 584. I mow 5 acres and not sure what brand to get. I am liking both the Bush Hog and the Woods brands. Looking to get some other people's opinions on what they use and how they like them. I have used my neighbors 72" Woods and it mows good. I also want rear discharge to spread out the clippings better than the side discharge. Any and all opinions greatly appreciated

Having owned 2 side discharge finish mowers id agree with going rear discharge. My Woods rm 372 behind a 25hp Kubota lasted @ 15 years. My Bush hog ath900 behind a 45hp New Holland maybe 10. Both were side discharge and I believe the wind tunnel we effect hastens the decks demise. Both decks were 7 gauge but became unsafe thin. But they cut a lot of acres....Landpride is a good product. Currently have a rotary brush cutter from them. Bought new in 2017-good quality. It's my understanding Woods makes John Deere s Frontier finish mowers. Landpride & Woods both make a heavy finish mower line with free swinging blades for heavier material than a normal yard, expensive but may be something to look at.

Currently own a county line 6' rear discharge finish mower and have not been happy with it. I have had to put lock nuts and washers on the bolts that hold the gear box plate to the deck. As it came from the supply company it would shake itself apart. Still have to retighten them every season, and the idler pulleys are poor quality, parts are cheap online due to them being King Kutters, but parts at the supply companies stores are ridiculous. Don't be in a position where you can't wait for parts to come in.

I have an older Woods 84 inch I bought used. It has been an excellent mower. Just now looking up the Bush Hog it appears to be nearly identical. Will you be buying used or new? Between the two brands I'd say it comes down to what's available, price, dealer support, etc. From what I could see the Bush Hog looked to have pneumatic tires. Having to keep those little dolly wheels inflated would be a negative for me. Woods are solid.

I have a 6ft rear discharge King Cutter. It's going on 17 years and I cut about 3 acres. It's still in very good condition. If I had to buy another mower, it wold be another King Cutter.

Befco 17-C50-RD7... check them out. We have an RD5 variant ( The "5" in RD5 means 5' or 60 inches); and it's proven to be a touch little number.

I'm located in SW Missouri, so that's the reason I chose those 2 brands. Not that I'm opposed to the others. I looked at King Cutters at local farm and home store. Not very impressed with them. Look cheaply made. Also have looked at Land Pride those looked rugged but dont know of anybody running them.

I would buy used if I could find something close to where I am. I have dealers all over with 72" & 60" used. I am wanting at least the 84" to cover the width of my tractor.

My neighbors Woods 72" that I borrowed is nice. He has had it for over 25 years. I'm just looking for good quality like that. Also would like it to last for at least half that time. If that's at all possible. Today's craftsmanship is a crap shoot though.

Not opposed to sticking $5000 on it but I would like it make it past 10 years with minimal repairs.

According to the interwebz, Befco mowers are sold at John Deere dealerships under the "Frontier" brand name.

Looks like the Frontier model number would be GM2084R

The research I saw was that Woods makes the Frontier mowers for John Deere. I found a used Frontier 84" about 3 hours from my house.
Could be different OEM (Original Equiment Manufacturers) for different models. You'll have to look at whatever model you're thinking about and judge for yourself as to whether it's heavy enough for your standards. Unfortunately, we can't just rely on a brand or a name anymore. There is variability of quality even within the same brand name. I just know that the model circled in the picture that I attached is a dead ringer for our Befco 5' mower... just different width... and green paint.

Definitely looks like a stout unit.

My only knock with the Befco is... pneumatic tires. If you get one, or another one with similar sized pneumatic tires... just put tubes in them and fill them with enough slime to plug a culvert... wipe your hands and walk away.

Otherwise, you'll be messing with them constantly.

If you try to run them tubeless... such a little tire will often get down in some little rut, or a gopher hole, or just about any surface imperfection so that the entire sidewall is being pushed against... even with the ability to caster...

Rear Discharge hands down is supreme.

If I had the money I'd get RD990X which can do light brush mowing too.

Woods,Bush Hog, Landpride or JD Frontier you can go wrong. Do not get pneumatic tires! I have a 84" Sitrex. It's old, I bought it used but has been a good mower. I will be replacing it probably next year. I will be going with either a Woods or Bush Hog because of dealers in my area. Rear discharge for sure. I mow about 10 acres several times a year.
