861 with 2 bottom plow

I just put a 2 bottom plow behind my 861. Never used one before and I'm wondering what gear/speed plowing normally done it. And, is the draft control lever supposed to be vertical or horizontal? My ground is mostly wet clay so I was having troubles with my wheels spinning even with wheel weights. If anyone has any tips it would be appreciated.

Draft /position control is to be in the draft position I.E. lever down. Position control is up. The way it works is when the pulling gets hard the system will lift the plow as needed to keep things working as they should. As for what gear I always used 1st on my 841 but 1st on an 841 is a bit faster then 1st on your tractor

Depending on variables such as soil, moisture, you will determine what gear works best for you. The sound of the engine, the amount of throttle, and how the soil turns over will help you decide what is working best for you. I too doubt if it will be first gear, If I plowed in first gear Id still be working some of the fields I was in when I was a kid.

DR----I plow in 2nd Gear with my 8N pulling a 2 bottom plow..this 8N has only 250 hours on a rebuilt engine and I can tell you that the 8N handles the plowing in 2nd gear with no problem....

In a few weeks I will be plowing for the first time with my 860 and the 2 bottom plow. From using the 860 this winter plowing snow, I figure that the 860 will just be "toying" with the 2 bottom and plan on plowing in 3rd gear.

The manual recommends plowing in 3rd gear with the 800's, but I am sure different soils may dictate what gear works best for you.

First gear is way to slow for plowing....

(quoted from post at 00:41:55 04/08/11) I just put a 2 bottom plow behind my 861. Never used one before and I'm wondering what gear/speed plowing normally done it. You have to fine tune the control lever to find the dept you want to maintain with the plow... Push the control leaver about haft way down and once the plow sucks in good move the leaver up till you find the dept you want the plow to work at,, once you find that spot just return to it every time...

It depends mostly upon your ground but a decent 861 should pull a 2X14" plow in third gear in most conditions and fourth gear in many conditions. Plow as fast as possible (or nearly so) to roll the soil coompletely.

If your draft control system is working properly, which is unlikely, you should plow with the draft/position control lever in the draft position.

All that said, if is difficult to plow clay soil and much more so when it is wet. You would be advised to let the ground dry out first.

Ah but you do not have the Ozark mountain rocks and clay. But I also do not plow big areas and yes I have come to a dead stop and stalled the engine in 1st gear. Now out in the open field I use 1st gear also but that is in the over drive side of the Sherman. If it all where a person is and the area they are plowing in

As others have said, draft lever down. Set the top link (bottom hole on the tractor)as long as possible and still get the plow to start in the ground at the ends. Good sharp lays are a real plus here. A short top link will cause the tractor hydraulic to "hunt" for a level plain, causing the tractor to spin. Rear wheels should be set at 56 inches, center to center, front ones clear in.
