88 super diesel

Guys I found a super 88 diesel for sale for $2000. It has nice paint, faded but nice, all the metal is there, wide front, brand new 14.9X38, fronts are shot, live hydraulics(I dont know if they all came with that) sounds real strong. Now I was going to spend the money to make my JD A a puller, but my question is should I keep the JD original and go with the ollie? I was thinking that the oliver is alot more tractor to start with and probably cheaper horsepower, maybe I am wrong. I would love to make the ol two cylinder a strong puller but it would also be nice to keep it all original and therefore keep it worth more. could someone please steer me in the right direction?

I bleed JD green, but will be the first to admit you can build any other color tractor for a fraction of the cost.

What class are you going to pull? The 88 diesel engine is limmited to the amount of extra power you can gain from it. (indirect injection, small ports, 4 main bearings) If you switch to a gas engine there is alot of potential, or install a direct injection 283 or 310 diesel.

Around here the lightest class mostly is 5500, there are a handful of pulls that have a 4700, but not many, I would only pull in 5500 with it. The next class it 7000, so thats getting expensive, I would buy a 4010 or 4020 if I wanted to move up to that class.

In my are there are four 88,s that pull at all the local pulls. 4500,5500,6500 Lb. classes. One diesel and the others are gas. The HP cap is 60 and your allowed 16/9 tires ( uncut ) and they are very tough. The one gas pulls in the next class up with cut tires and 80 HP cap. I don't remember if all are super 88's. I have seen other 88's pull also, some do Ok, some don't. Hope this helps.

I pull a 88 diesel in 5500, 6500, and 7500. The tractor is very competative in all three classes. I do not have the original 265 engine, I have a turboed 283 that runs very competatively even against the bigger iron.
