8850 Repower kit

I posted about this on the thread about Kinze's twin 855 engined 8850 . Found another company providing a kit to repower a 8850 , CEEQUIP , they have used a replacement subframe to rubber mount an road truck engine similar to Kinze .
One question , are 8850's with an original V8 955 going to become a collectors item , or is the reputation of them too bad .

There is only one 8850 in my area and I have never worked on one. The one north of me 25 miles has been setting in the weeds for the last 10 years, it was in running order when the guy parked it. This guy had a lot of "old" money and did some strange things that can't be explained, for one he bought a "new" 4960 in 1992,had it unloaded behind a big double corn crib,,and it has set there(never moved) ever since..I realize your thinking I'm full of cr***, but it's the truth and he won't sell it, I'm wondering what a "zero" hour 4960 will be worth some day, and what it would take to get it started, this Ohio climate is not very forgiving....

The engine was taken out of production because of high cost, not problems (but it may not have been perfect). Five years ago there were no service crankshafts, I imagine the list of parts that are no longer avail. is longer now.

It seemed that I understood the guy near me had engine head problems..I have heard rumors of engine trouble with them. I was at the new engine plant back in 1977 (I think) they were probucing the V8 then, 4 of them were running hard on engine Dyno's, It was an impressive sight, and sound....

He needs to ship that 4960 to a fence row in montana to protect his investment. It needs to be under roof here in KY.

My cousins have 2 of them. The one has almost 10,000 untouched hrs on the engine and the other one just went over 5,000 with no problems. I have another neighbor with 2 of them and he has no problems. Problem wasn't reliablity if they weren't abused. It was the $$$ to fix them. And I for one don't understand why anybody would repower an 8850 with a Cummins. Last I heard the conversion cost around $20,000 and if the rest of the tractor like the tranny shells out you will spend that much and more for an overhaul. You would be better of in the long run buying a 8960 or 8970 if you want a cummins powered JD. Most of

There was just one 8850 in my area, and to the best of my knowledge he traded it for a 8970 and had no problems.

My brother and I found it in 1994, we tried to buy it then but the guy wouldn't think about it, since then he has been in and out of the nut house,,I should follow up on it...It was still there last spring,,never been moved, I have a pic of it here some where, I still haven't figured out this picture thing yet,,Darn it,,when I do I'll be posting more pic's than Walt :>)
