Just bought '49 8N - new to tractors but experienced mechanic. No brakes and oil is leaking on both sets of brake shoes. Previous owner replaced seals 2 years ago but still had leaks. Could it be overfull on oil? Any other suggestions?

It could be overfill...

My bet it is worn out hubs, BTDT.

Let me see if I can give you John Smith' s page on that.

After you study this, I will be happy to answer any other questions, and yes, I do have some pictures, but John has it all.

A 1949 only has the outer seal on the rear axle. Ford added an inner seal in 1950 because with just the outer seal it tends to leak. Remove the bottom bolt on one of the side inspection plates to the left or right under the seat. One has dip stick for measuring fluid. If fluid drains out it is over filled. However draining over fill will not fix your brakes. They are soaked with fluid and need to be replaced. You may need new seals and hubs to stop from messing up your new brake shoes. With a 1949 N always make sure the fluid level is below the bottom bolt hole as above and always park it on level ground. If not you will never have brakes.

John and Dunk - Thanks much. All info and pictures helped a lot and gives me a starting point. I may questions down the road.
