8N drain plug

Friend who is partially disabled asked me to help change the transmission/hydraulic oil in his 8N. Have never owned nor driven one. The plug on his is in the bottom of the transmission, about in line with the floorboards. Boogered up somewhat by a pipe wrench and then painted over. I drove a 1" 6-point socket on with a hammer to seat fully. The socket turned but the plug did not. Catalog from Dennis Carpenter shows "hydraulic pump drain plug, 2.5 diameter". Fits 9,2,8, NAA. Is this the plug? Is the original made of cast iron? Is the 1" wrench correct size? My plan, to be changed with your good advice, is to get a new plug and gasket in hand and then remove the old one. Probably will drill small hole in center to drain the oil and then drill larger, perhaps even with hole saw to leave thin section in the housing threads to be removed with gentle chisel action. If the plug is steel, I might weld a bar to it for removal.
Suggestions welcome.

The part number of the plug in a catalog is 9N-7010. The illustration in the catalog does not clearly show the location on the tractor. Is this the correct plug?

bussdriver.........the square head drain plug is really 1-1/16".

First thing to do is drain the square diffy plug 'cuz it peeees with some accuracy. Then remove the 3" tranny-plug; and finally the 3" hydro-plug. Refill up by the tranny shifter with 5-gals of thin Ford/New Holland spec: M2C134D. Alternately, use the older 1939 spec 90wt mineral gear oil. Modern GL-1 is close approximation. .......Dell

common problem when people are too cheap to replace the 50 cent gasket and either goop/glue the plug in, or torque it to a thousand pounds.

weld a big hex nut to it and be good to go.

make a new gasket out of gasket paper.. paperboard or any non corrugated cardboard ( soap box, shoe box, cerial box.. etc.. )

Bus....it takes two 9n 7010 on all "N" tractors. One for the tranny and one for the hyd.pump sump. The only exception I know to the above statement would be the 8n 7010 for the tranny on the 8ns.These plugs had a magnet attached on the inside to attract loose metal floating around in the tranny oil. don b1

After getting hit in head, glancing blow from slipping wrench from my helper. I purchased the 1 1/16" Socket from Northern Tool. Long hvy duty socket wrench at farm auction. Now I have the right tool to drain. It is hard to hold a wrench on the plug, while holding your arm and the wrench up, and with each slip. damage the plug..

I could not find the 1 1/16 8 point socket on the Northern website. Would you have a catalog/part number?

I've had to use heat on some of mine the first time, once heated they come off real easy , size is 1 1/16 .

Bus Driver, Don't have a part #, I could not find my receipt for the 1 1/16" socket from Northern Tool, and I know they only show sets in the catalog. The Northern Tool I shop at is just at the beginning of my neighborhood, so I just ran in and picked it up.
