8n Engine Rebuild

I got this 1950 8n (*8n336062*) *=star from a friend of mine whos father died years ago. The old man restored tractors as a hobby. The tractor sat outside for years and did not have a manifold on it so moisture got in the engine and corroded it up and it would not turn over. I tried ATF and disel as suggested by Soundguy with no success. I removed the engine and tore it appart and got all the parts freed up. The sleeves are .090 and are in excellent shape. This is not consistent with the star in the serial no. Also, the valve tapplets are adjustable which I don't think come standard on my tractor. I think the old man rebuilt the engine before he died and did a valve job. My thoughts are to replace the pistons and rings, rod and crank bearings and go back togeather with the engine. Any opinions will be appreciated.

We ALL know these are tough economic times. I reccommend you take your stuff to a proper machine shop (shop a bit and find the best quote) and have them look it over (micrometers and such). It will be $ well spent on the overall project. HTH

I've read in previous post that some people are dead set on the tolorances shown in the F-04 manual. If you are planning on bushogging 10 hours a day in 100 deg. weather you need to follow all the guidelines. However if you are only going to load and unload the tractor for shows, you can have some degree of variance. I'm not planning on going to shows but a finish mower is going to be put on this old tractor and used to mow my 2 acre lawn once a week or so. I'm going to use my Harbor Freight caliper and do some measurements. If everything looks good, no scoring or piting, and the tolorances are close, do you think it will do what I need it to do? By the way, I read your articles on link_disallowed and got some good tips. Thanks for all you do for us amatures.

I tried the HF calipers to check bearing journals and got just about any reading I wanted to see. I got some mics and got good readings.
