My son posted some time ago about our 48 8N, 139472, ft mnt, 12V with alt. It had been missing most of the summer and had low power. All cyl had good spark but still ran on 2 or 3 cys. Now that mowing season if over we decided to pull the head and see what was going on. The breaker plate had been replaced, new sparkies, good fuel flow. Started every time, no smoke. Before taking the hood off, I decided to check out the manifold as it had oil in the 1 and 2 cy intake port. Placed manifold on ground and used garden hose to fill the exhaust side. Water came out in the 1 - 2 intake port. So we had been fighting this all year, but replaced manifold, tbl fixed! Runs like a new one. I also checked the new manifold before installing. The old manifold had been on about a year and half.

Thanks for posting back and letting us know that, that makes a few of those that we have heard of.

That doesn't quite seem to explain the oil in it to me.

Prob was just left over MMO that did not get burned out. We did add several tbl spoons a few weeks ago to all cyl to help w/stuck valve (stuck valve was not prob). Thats my guess. Anyway it never smoked a bit.

Jash38......on a scale of 1-10, burned out castiron exhaust manifold is abouta 2 in probability. Theres alotta other more common causes of low power and missing. These N-Engines are SOOooooo GOOoooood they will start and run on just 2-cylinders. Thanks for follow-up. ......Dell

i do not think it was burnt out, was brand new out of the box when we put it on, but bad from day 1 as it had only ran on 2 maybe 3 cyl for the last year as we just found out. it feels like a new eng now that all 4 are going and it does have the power now. had the dirt scoop on and she did pull and wanted to go some more. before it would almost die just going in reverse into the shop. put the brush hog on and cut in tall grass, up hill and did not bog down one bit. so now all that is left is lift work ( worn pin as i have to play with the draft/ position lever to get lift to go up ) and install a shift lever for the sherman this winter.
