8n front mount distributor

Wish I could buy one at 180% off. From what I've read on this forum (and these guys know their stuff) it cannot be installed 180 "degrees" out of time. Of course they said Titannic was unsinkable too.

hope you can take a joke,

Pete

No, Hold it against the front of the engine and just start your two mounting bolts..Now hold slight pressure against the distributor(hold pressure toward the engine)..turn the distributor shaft with the rotor cap till it falls in place. Now tighten the two mounting bolts. You will know that it fell into place correctly when there is no space, no crack between the base of the distributor and the front of the engine..

(quoted from post at 18:48:39 05/15/08) Can this distributor be installed 180% off?

If bolted up 180 off, you will most likely break it, as the drive tang/slot is offset to one side of center, like this:

Yes the distributer can be mounted i80 out and not break anything. I did it on mine and the slot and and cam fit loose in the correct position and real tight when wrong.

Ezyed is a very lucky person. Many have been broken by carelessly mounting them wrong. The answer is still NO...It will not be sitting flush with the front of the engine which tells you DO NOT TRY TO TIGHTEN IT DOWN "CAUSE IT OBVIOUSLY AIN'T FITTING RIGHT".....when correct it will fall in place flat against the engine..no forcing--it drops into place..

No. The tang will only fit one way. if you try to install it 180 out it will not seat and you will break it tightening the bolts.

Took this before I installed this new front mount in my 8N after reading similar posts a while back. You have to look close to see the offset and I imagine with a little brute force it could be installed out of phase.

John, since you have such a clear photo of that side, I don't suppose you would have a view looking straight down into the top where the coil will sit, do you?

Just note which way the rotor pointed when you take the distributor off, put it back the same way.The offset is easy to see on old distributors. The tang was milled into the end of the shaft with very sharp edges. The new photo looks like the shaft is a cast part.Rounded edges with less offset than old original parts.Looks like an almost right china import..

Yes! Exactly like those. I just now noticed your response with the pictures.
Thank you,
JMOR
