8N Help --- No power under load

Newbie here. Was mowing the lawn and suddenly there was no power under load. Notice that the exhaust manifold was leaking so got a new manifold along with new spark plugs. The new manifold was bigger then stock so now I have an exhaust leak between the manifold and the muffler although this should not make the tractor lose power under load ???

Tractor starts up but no power under load. Any hints or suggestions as to what could be the problem would be great. I took a look at the spark plug connection and it appears to be in the right sequence but not sure. Looking at the distributor cap I'm not sure which wire is #1.

Turn your big screw on yer carb out a 1/4 turn.

Gokou........ummm.....SUDDEN no power under load you say. Starts up withoutta problem you say. Sounds like yer down-pointing MAINJET is clogged. Turn it ALL the way CLOCKWIZE while counting the turns and fractions of turns. This might un-plug yer mainjet. Then reset yer mainjet to the count of yer turns. And try it again.

Theres other obscure causes of sudden loss of power but according to Hakeem's Razor, clogged jet.

Firing order for 5-nipple sidemount is 1,2,4,3 CCW. #1 nipple is usually just clockwize of spring clippie. Sparkie coil wire connection is CCW of spring clippie.

When installing new muffler to new or old manifold, JACK-UP the muffler pipe (protected by a board) so the joint is really tite before you bolt the 2-part clamp together. Thick side of muffler clamp groove is "down". Look.........Dell

Yes, was cutting grass and sudden lost power. I thought it was do to the exhaust manifold leak but that wasn't it.

Sorry for the ignorance but is the mainjet the big screw on top of the carburetor?

I'll re-look to see if the spark plug connection is correct but I remove one wire at a time when replacing the spark plug.

Thanks for the tip on the muffler. It's leaking so I need to re-bolt it. Do to the difference in pipe size not sure if I can get it tight enough to prevent any leaks. This exhaust manifold must have been made from China because it's bigger and does not fit as well compare to the stock one.

Hope I can get the tractor working again because my grass is getting tall.

dirt in carb. pull the main throttle needle adjusting screw out, then remove the drain plug at bottom of carb. next squirt a half can of carb cleaner in at top and let it and the dirt and crud run out the bottom. RP

Gokou.......and the difference between DOWN-POINTING and BIGHEAD screw is????

Not all down-pointing mainjets have big heads, but they ALL point down. Understand?

And keep yer itchy twitchy meathooks off'n them handy-dandy carb tweek'ems unless you know what yer doing.

Check the down-pointing mainjet exactly as I instructed you.......Dell

I had the same thing (loss of power and sputtering under load). Turned out to be the secret fuel screen in the carb inlet elbow.

This is really easy to check. First, turn off the gas at the tank and put a bucket under the carb. Then disconnect the fuel line from the carb.

Now the 90 degree elbow will unscrew from the carb. On the inside end there is a little fuel screen. Hold it up to the light. Is it half full of gunk? If so, there's your problem.

To clear the gunk, spray it down with WD-40, then tap-tap on the work bench and the clog will fall down into the elbow. Then just tap it out.

Well I try cleaning the carburetor and adjusting the screw but still no luck. Any other help or suggestions?

Could it be my 3 point hitch mower? The PTO? Clutch? Governor?
