Hello,I have a 8n that i recently had the distributer off to replace the coil.(front Dist)
I have double checked the firing order and my question is can the distributer be installed 180 off? It does run but only on number one and two cylinders, 3 and 4 are cold. Thanks for any help. Todd

Nope if installed 180 out and you tighten the bolts down you will brake it instead of haveing it 180 out. Since you say 3 and 4 are cold switch the wires on them. You can't hurt it doing so but you might find it runs like it should if you do so.

Distributor will only go back on one way. Best way to re-install the dist. is to just start the two bolts that hold it to the block, then hold slight pressure on the dist. toward the block. While holding slight pressure, turn the dist. shaft with the rotor button till the dist tang drops in the slot in the end of the cam shaft. When it drops in right the base of the dist. will be totally flush/no gap between the base of the dist. and the block. Then tighten both bolts. Lots of distributors have been ruined by tightening them down without them being properly seated. This don't appear to be your problem. It won't run at all unless the dist. is properly installed. Well i did a afternoon of checking and here is what I found.
I had just bought this 8n and i don't know much about them (obviously!). Well it had a badly broken exhaust manifold, ports wide open and I now think it had been like that for a long time. It came from a estate auction so whoever had an a wire right from the ignition switch to the coil, bypassing the B resistor, it ran enough to get it off the trailer but melted the coil shortly after in the garage.(12v cov)

Thinking that it was related to my coil replacement that is what "sparked" my first question thinking it was something I did. In order to rule out anything mechanical I did a compression test and found 120 on 1 and 2 and nothing, nada on 3 and 4. when i pulled the hood so I could see down the plug holes noticed the ex valves stuck open on 3 and 4. With nothing to lose soaked them down best I could with PB blaster and tapped them down a few times with a special designed Ex valve drift.(phillips screwdriver) Did a compression test again and they are right up there with the other two. Fired it back up and it runs great! These things are tough. Thanks for the help, Todd

Way to go, Todder. Doesn't it feel great when, as a N rookie and non-mechanic, we can figure out and actually fix something without making it worse?
