8N muffler decision...

Just curious how most of you"all have your mufflers on your 8N"s. Straight out the back underneith, or, straight up?
Thanks for your input!

My 601 is vertical and my N's are horizontal. Vertical can be a problem around tree limbs but is better for giving hayrides!!

KRH:

I have horizontal exhausts on all of my vintage Fords except the 961 which is rarely used.

I do lots of mowing, and vertical exhausts would routinely be damaged by tree limbs.

I put mine straight up. Just like the way it looks better. I have the other muffler for straight out the back that I took off if I decide to convert it back though. The others are right about it swatting tree limbs. I've also had problems keeping the clamp tight.

Hey good one,
You know what? I have been thinking of making mine go towards the front and blow down at a 45 degree angle just in front of my right front wheel. I don't care for it out the top or the back for different reasons. I saw a delivery truck once with exaust out the front right side. The guy said it was great for leaving the truck running while working out the side and back of the vehicle. I'm building a skid plate for my tractor so my muffler would be protected from debris.

P.S. If you are working around your tractors rear end or anywhere actually, you should never leave it running while you are on the ground. I have heard of many accidents that could have been avoided by turning the tractor off while working on it.

if you change 3 point equipment frequently with the engine running, it's a no brainer depends on how you use your n.

It was quieter when I had it running below, out the back, but I got tired of the fumes while changing implements.

Installed the vertical exhaust on it a couple of years back....much better.

I run a cordwood saw, use vertical exhaust. It does away with hot foot and I dont worry about the muffler dragging dry hay .Its easy to keep the edges of the hay land free of low hanging limbs.Never liked tree limbs in my face while haying.

Personal I don't like a up-rite zaust pipe,,, I will tell ya one combination that won't werk,,, a teenager mowing a 40 acre field that has one tree in the middle of it,,, that up rite zaust pipe will git tore off

I like mine on the bottom. I have pulled mine off several times rubbing logs and three months ago It came off three times while bushhogging. The clamp and pipe is old, and is easily bumped off.
I remember riding my grandfathers AC 50 years ago and the pipe was up and blowing back in my face and his tractor seemed louder than my 52 8N.
I like the lower pipe because I can hear the engine better too.
