8N Oil pump

Is there a way to test an 8N oil pump while out of the tractor? We used rubber wheel to engage the gear head, while the pickup tube was placed in a bucket of oil, and we didn't get any oil flow. Is that a accurate test or did we do something wrong?

Was it turning the correct direction?

Did you prime it?

Do you possibly have narrow gears in a body made for the wider gears?

Yes and no, Ron.

N pumps wear initially in the bushing and gears but eventually the housing will wear such that clearances between even new gears and the housing will result in low hot oil pressure at low RPM.

A rebuild kit will address the bushing/gear issues but not the gear/housing clearance issues if excessive clearances are due to housing wear rather than poor quality aftermarket gears.

Of course you can measure clearances between the (new) gears and housing but unless you can accurately do this yourself it may be more cost effective to replace the housing, other parts and align bore your block if (and only if) your tractor had low hot oil pressure at low RPM prior to disassembly.

It should pic up the oil spin'n the drive gear by hand

The cap on my oil pump had a place worn it it with one of the gears.

I layed some good emory cloth on a piece of flat steel, and sanded it down till it was gone.

I did that before I brazed the pickup tube back to it.

The solder joint was history.

Thank-you to all who replied. Yes we rebuilt the oil pump with the kit that comes with an overhaul kit. How can the tolerances be measured on the housing to tell if it is excessively worn? How could we find out about the wide vs. narrow gears,(I assume putting the old gears against the new gears?)And as for oil pressures before the overhaul, we don't know since the tractor never ran before. It ran like a champ after the overhaul, except we could not get any oil press. And finally we did prime the pump but do not get any oil flowing out of it. (outside of the engine)
