8N Side Mount Timing Question?

I was wondering if is possible to place the flywheel on incorrectly during clutch replacement or if this is impossible because of the dowel studs. I am asking because I am having trouble trying to time my distributor by the timing marks because I cannot seem to find them with my timing light. Have painted both marks and nothing shows up with a light. I cannot get my idle speed down to below 600 rpm. Could this be the problem. Thanks for any advise.

600 rpm could be a problem. If so why not static time your tractor? Find top dead center on #1. Then use a hand crank to set the flywheel to 4 degrees before top dead center. Use a volt meter to set the dist so the points are just starting to open.

impossible because of the dowel studs." That's correct. Dowels limit you to two positions & since you have two sets of timing marks 180 from each other, either of the two positions work as intended....just fine.
You should see the marks at any rpm, since there are marks not only at zero, but marks all the way to 20 degrees advanced.

MadMax.......NO, it is NOT possible to install yer 8N's flywheel outta time because of dowl stud spacing. Remember, you haffta slow down the engine with the behind the carb idlespeed adjust screw. Ennything under 500rpms is close enuff for timing lite, 4*BTDC.

Cookie is correct, you can also "static time" yer 8N engine. Early aircooled VW's were also static timed using test lite, very common procedure. Surprizingly enuff, the FO4 also has instructions on how to static time. $25 (cheap) .......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
