8N Sleeve puller

I just pulled the sleeves on my 8N block and I can tell you what I did. Knowing that I'll probably do this once in my life I wasn't keen on blowing a lot of dough on a proper tool - so I took some scrap White Ash wood I had (any hard wood will do - Oak, Maple) and scribed the size of the cylinder opening on it. Then taking my jigsaw I tilted the blade about 5 degrees and cut out a one-inch thick disc. Now when I flipped it over and banged it into the sleeve it caught and after some presation with a piece of 2x4 and a mallet the plug and sleve came out together. First two came out clean, last two, I had to cut two more discs as they splinteered. Still took maybe an hour and cost zip. Good Luck

You only need a puller if you are doing the sleeves in-frame with the crank in place. If the block is off the tractor and the crank is out use a driver style tool to knock them out from the bottom - faster and easier: [u:ea5421dc3d]Removal Video[/u:ea5421dc3d]

The full length OEM style installation tool is the only way to go for the thin wall (.040) sleeves and also works beautifully for the thick wall (.090) slleves. The shorter installation tool works fine for the .090 wall sleeves but I don't recommend it for the thin wall ones.

I have and engine knock that I am trying to fix by installing a new sleeve. I was told that my block is also worn out and that even if I install a new sleeve I will still have the knock because the sleeve will fit loosely in the block. Is there anything else I can do to remedy this like an oversize sleeve or something to that nature? It is an 8N as well. Thanks much.
 
They also make sleeves in .002 oversize to compensate for wear in the cylinder wall. You"d be surprised how well a new sleeve will fit into a block that the old one moves in.

How worn is the block and how loose is the sleeve?

Minor looseness can be corrected by installing the new sleeve with a chemical sleeve retaining compound - e.g. glue. Loctite 640 High Strength Sleeve Retainer is one such product.

If the wear is excessive .002 oversize repair sleeves are available. For best results the block should be rebored/honed to obtain the proper fitment on the oversize sleeve.

And if the block currently has the .040 thin wall sleeves the best (but not cheapest) solution IMO is to rebore and install the OEM thick wall sleeves. This was the Ford recommended procedure for motors originally equipped with the .040 sleeves.
