I am planning on splitting my 8N to replace the transmission seal, and while I am at it probably the clutch. My question is, approximately how many hours does this take start to finish? Thanks

I had to do the same thing. I got everything ready ahead of time, blocks, chain hoist, drain gas tank and remove hood, etc. I planned a full day, starting in the morning and finished in early afternoon. I didn't hurry and took my time . Did the transmission seal, pressure plate and clutch disk. Also washed out the inside area from oil that had leaked thru the seal.

Tough to answer your question.
What is your skill level?
Have you split a tractor before or will you need to stop and read the manual as you go?
Will you need to ask questions here as you go?
Are you working with hand tools or do you have an air compressor and air impact wrench?
Are you doing it in a well lighted, heated garage with a concrete floor or on the frozen ground in the snow?
For what it's worth, about 8 years ago I had an 8N with a smokey engine and a 2N with a strong engine.
I started about 8 AM on a Saturday morning and switched engines in them. By late afternoon I had both tractors running/driving again.
This was in a garage in the early summer. Nice temps, good conditions.
I did not have air tools then.
There are folks here who could do the job in half that time. But that's what it took me.
A clutch and seals can easily be done - if you don't get side tracked or go off on some mission creep in half a day.

Very hard to say. A person like me and how my shop is set up 2 or so hours to have it split an back together on a good day. But I have 3 chain hoists and all the blocking a guy would ever need. Plus I have done it a good number of times. So it could be a couple hours into a week or more depending on how much time you want to take an the tools you have and how good you are at turning a wrench

Like the others have said, a good full day should do it. I did a first time ever split in late November last year and it took about 2 1/2 days. I had nothing prepared ahead of time, didn"t have a clue on how to do it and have very limited mechanical skills. Plus I take a lot of breaks. With the help of the "N" people on these forums and taking my time I got it done. I now have the equipment and a little more confidence so next time should be a lot easier.

Thankyou all for the reply. I guess I should of had explained alot of the questions asked to begin with. I have a pretty good mechanical background, and have air tools. When I do this I plan on having all of the new parts I need, or think I will need. Old Henrys clutch just won't disengage right away and the wife wants to learn how to drive it so she can take that on tractor rides this year. I want her to be comfortable with the tractor so need to fix this first. Of coarse if she is driving this one I will probably have to get a a different ride :)

Ok so you added info which helps us help you. While you have it apart I would take the flywheel into a place Like O'Reilly's auto parts and have the flywheel surfaced. Since you having a sticking clutch problem you also may want to check the cotter pin drain hole and make sure it is good and clear and maybe replace the transmission input shaft seal. Oil soaked clutches tend to stick as do ones that are rusty

has the tractor sat for a while??..the clutch will stick if pedal is not blocked down..got a 8n that had sat for some time..clutch was stuck..broke it loose..sprayed clutch thru the drip hole in bell housing with carb cleaner, while motor was running..rode the clutch a while after spraying..keep clutch blocked..solved it

No the tractor has not been sitting much. I don't have a lot of work to do with it as we live in town. But we do tractor rides and I want to plow with this coming year. I do have a small cart to go get corn for the corn burner as well. We just did our second annual "FREEZE YOUR NUTS AND BOLTS OFF" ride yesterday. Put about 50 miles on. Since we only go as fast as the slowest tractor I get to lead with the 8N. I am going to try spraying a WHOLE can of brake cleaner. I did spray a little carb cleaner up the hole last week and it does seem better.
