ok lets start from the start.

its a 194? 7 or 8 (front distributor

ive had it about 6-8 weeks and its always started and ran fine, it sits in the shed when not in use

about a week ago i started the tractor and it started and run fine, i shut it off after a few minutes and it sat for a week i went to start it tonight and the batt was dead as dead can be, so i charged it for a while and hit the button and she fired right up, so i went and mowed the grass for about 1 1/2 hours and shut it off in front of the garage and the hit the button right away and it popped right off so i shut it down again, did a couple things and came back to it about 15 min latter and it was dead again, i charged it and it never started again the rest of the night :( i pulled the plugs and they had spark when i cranked it so i shot some carb cleaner in the cylinders and put the plugs in and cranked without any luck then cranked it again and it started up, let it run for a minute and shut it off again and no start... pulled plugs and sprayed again and nothing, not a pop or fart or nothing, its dark im ticked so its back in the shed till i can cool off :(

SO any ideas? spraying carb cleaner in carb throat when cranking does nothing, put my hand over it and its got good suction and gas pukes out after,

im lost :(

PS: its a 6v converted to 12 and has a ceramic resistor inline to the distributor

thanks

Borrow another 12 v. battery from someone for awhile.

Sorta like the battery may not keep a charge very long. Or, a short in the starting system is draining things.

Could be as simple as a bad ignition switch and or a problem with the wiring. 15 minutes and the battery is dead say major draw which is not right and could be a bad alternator. The start then no start a simple bad switch. As to the year all of them are 1948 or later but yes some where made in 1947 but then again you can buy a 2013 car right now can't you?? Same held true back then. You need to do your 101 trouble shooting and check for spark then fuel and go from there

What happens when you connect or disconnect the ground to the battery? If there is a spark, there is a draw somewhere in the system. No spark, no demand from the tractor so I would suspect the battery.

ok so i dug into it, and what i found is

1, alternator is hot all the time (gm 12v con)

2, weak spark to start with then lost all spark

3, resistor has 13.7 going in and 13.7 coming out

4, coil has sprung a leak :(

so it looks like i need a new square coil and resistor and a repair to the alternator :(

any other ideas/suggestions ?? thanks

sHan........1) with the engine NOT running yer alternator should be hand cool. Taker into autoparts store fer "free" checkout.

3) resistor is GOOD, ...but... yer points are "open" and you will NEVER make sparkies

4) when you by-pass the "infamous ballast resistor" for hotter sparkies and quicker starting, you will ALWAYS melt some of the insulative tar and eventually you will never have sparkies. .........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

thanks

il check the points in the daylight,

i never thought about the points being open when i checked the voltage...

also i see the spring on the coil looks burnt pretty bad so i need to look at alot of thing :(

i stuck my knife to the back of the alt and it sticks so its trying to excite itself even with the key off, i unplugged the 2 wire plug and it stops exciting so i left it off for now, il worry about the alt AFTER i get sparky again :)

thanks
